Morning Music Notes – Boring You With News From the Grammys

So the Grammys Were Last Night…

The Grammy Awards took place last night in Los Angeles. There were lots of performances, a few stand out moments, and even time for a few awards. I won’t rehash all of the winners – here is the full winners list – but The Black Keys, Fun., and Mumford & Sons all did very well.

Album of the Year went to Mumford & Sons, Record of the Year to Goyte featuring Kimbra, Song of the Year and Best New Artist to Fun., and Sir Paul McCartney even managed to knick a Grammy, too (hint: not Best New Artist).

Remember that Frank Ocean / Chris Brown altercation not too long ago? Well Chris Frown lost out on an award to Frank Ocean, and was the only one not giving him a standing ovation. Douche bag!

There were some tributes, such as one to Dave Brubeck, one to Bob Marley (which featured a lot of non-Marley tracks), and at the end, a tribute to hip hop / MCA of the Beastie Boys. The super group who played at the end were Grammy host LL Cool J, Travis Barker, Chuck D, Tom Morello, and DJ Z-Trip, and they had a short nod to the departed MCA in their tune. Check it out below (it’s slightly cut off).

We have a whack of videos below courtesy of Mr. World Premiere. Check out the Black Keys spin on Lonely Boy – very impressive stuff.

Morning Music Notes – Denying Rumours Until The Truth Comes Out

Yet Again, Tom Morello Denies Rage Against the Machine Album Rumours

Clearly Tom Morello doesn’t watch the news. Lance Armstrong was accused of using performance enhancing drugs for all of his Tour de France victories, yet he denied it and sued people. He finally admitted it was all a lie and he was in denial. A totally incomparable situation is Tom Morello’s Rage Against the Machine album rumours. The band have denied them repeatedly, but we all know you’re testing something out in the studio. Sure, you’re afraid the magic isn’t there, so you don’t want people to know you’re in the studio. But let us know already. (Note: I’m probably way off in my theory)

After Tuesday’s new album rumours due to a throwaway comment, guitarist Tom Morello has yet again denied that a new album is in the works. In a Q & A on Twitter, a fan asked “ok spill the beans, new rage album or not? Pleeeeeeeease #resortedtobeggingnow.” Morello responded “‘fraid not. Appreciate the enthusiasm but ‘no new rage album’ is kinda like ‘not seeing a unicorn’. It’s not exactly NEWS.”

This segues nicely into our newest segment at PeteHatesMusic – Unicorn Spotting.

Grammy Rules – Nipples: Yes for Men, No for Women

A leaked document has revealed some interesting stipulations at this Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The memo is from CBS, who produced the infamous 2004 Super Bowl, where ‘wardrobe malfunction’ became part of our lexicon. The document says that men can show their nipples, while women cannot (via Gigwise). I have the opposite rules at my parties.

Some quotes from the memo: “CBS Program Practices advises that all talent appearing on camera please adhere to Network policy concerning wardrobe. Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic.

Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples.”

It also notes that shirts with foreign languages on them need to be reviewed. What’s this about no side or bottom boob curves?! Worst.Event.Ever!

Morning Music Notes – Occupy Guitarmy Movement Rues Poor Name

Occupy Guitarmy Hard to Take Serious With Terrible Pun

Rage Against the Machine guitarist, and Harvard grad, Tom Morello, is releasing a World Wide Rebel Tour documentary to coincide with today’s Occupy Guitarmy (yes, it has a website) musical march (via Hollywood Reporter). I know headline writers are obsessed with puns to sell the story (not me, I swear), but guitarmy – seriously? The documentary is a 30-minute feature, which songs performed as his alter-ego, The Nightwatchman, plus a Q&A with Morello.

“The World Wide Rebel Tour is a virtual tour spanning the entire planet. From Malawi to Myanmar, from Uzbekistan to the U.S.A., people’s voices and struggles have made their way into my music,” said Morello of the documentary. “On May 1st, I’m returning the favor with this global rebel rocking throwdown. Free. Everywhere. May Day.”

For those of you in New York City, and wanting to say you were part of a “guitarmy”, Morello will be leading the pack from Bryant Park to Union Station as part of the Occupy Guitarmy movement. If I type guitarmy any more times, I’m going to get a guitar-rannosaurus rex and take over New York. Yup, that’s my attempt at contributing to the pun fun.

Damon Albarn Invites Noel Gallagher to Africa (And Not To Secretly Murder Him)

Over the last year, the sun must have crashed into the Earth, as the Damon Albarn – Noel Gallagher feud has budded into a friendship more unlikely than that of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. Now, Damon has even talked about wanting to collaborate with Noel Gallagher – what is going on?! (via NME).

Albarn said: “Well, why not? He should come on the Africa Express train in September. That’d be a nice chance to collaborate.”

Speaking about the famous feud, Damon said, “I never held anything against him, even right in the middle of it. I just kind of admired them in a way; that they were better at handling it all than me. They didn’t seem to get too affected by the bullshit.”

Translation: Our single sold more than theirs, so I don’t hold anything against them.

Sunday Morning Coming Down with Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine is a favourite band among the PHM team. But, they are not the typical type of band we post on Sunday Morning. We found this one going through a big stack of old CD singles.

RATM seems to have done this live, on BBC announcer Mark Goodier’s Saturday night show in the 90s. It’s a chilled-out version of Bombtrack with an incredible Tom Morello solo at the 2:00 mark.

Dig through your old CDs and listen to everything. You never know what you might find.

Morning Music Notes – Unoriginal: The Band. Original: Feistodon (Feist + Mastodon)

Drummer from The Band, Levon Helm, Dies at Age of 71

First Dick Clark, now Levon Helm – the 71 year old drummer from The Band passed away yesterday. To youngsters who don’t know them – yes, they were actually called The Band. A few days ago, his family had posted that Helm was in the final stages of cancer. One of the most influential drummers of his time, Helm touched and inspired many. Some quotes making the rounds yesterday:

Bob Dylan: “In response to Levon’s passing: He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I’m going to miss him, as I’m sure a whole lot of others will too.”

Patrick Carney (@PatrickCarney from the Black Keys): “one of the best singers and drummers and it all is sad.”

Tom Morello (@tmorello from Rage Against the Machine): “Hey Levon Helm, thanks man for carrying The Weight of that backbeat (and great vocals) for decades. Inspired so many”

Elton John: “When I heard The Band’s Music from Big Pink, their music changed my life. And Levon was a big part of that band. Nigel Olson, my drummer, will tell you that every drummer that heard him was influenced by him. He was the greatest drummer and a wonderful singer and just a part of my life that was magical. They once flew down to see me in Philadelphia and I couldn’t believe it. They were one of the greatest bands of all time. They really changed the face of music when their records came out. I had no idea he was sick so I’m very dismayed and shocked that he died so quickly. But now my son [Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John] has his name.”

Morning Music Notes – An Inanimate Object Pays Its Respects to Dick Clark

Celebrities Pay Their Respects to Dick Clark Over Twitter

Dick Clark, a man who died yesterday at the age of 82, lived to see many technological advancements in his lifetime. I bet he never thought receiving 140 character tributes on “Twitter” on the “Internet” on “computers” was something that would happen to him when he died – probably because he thought he was going to live forever. Below are some of the tweets from celebrities impacted by Dick Clark’s death, as well as a sad tribute from the Times Square Ball, which oddly has a Twitter account.

@RyanSeacrest: I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life.

@questlove: Dick Clark. A Great Philadelphian. Thank You Very Much!

@denisleary: Dick Clark dead. Okay so now I’m starting to get a little more concerned about all this 2012 Mayan shit

@JanetJackson: Dick Clark changed the face of musical television. He was wonderful to many artists including our family. We will miss him. God bless.

@jimmykimmel: I had the pleasure of working with Dick Clark many times – great guy. Some trivia: did you know he HATED music?

I hate music, too, Jimmy! That’s another thing that Dick and I have in common, besides a love for uniquely scented candles.

Blur to Release Massive Boxset with 65 Unheard Tracks

Blur are going to release a new boxset called ’21′, which will be a re-issuing of all of their albums, along with unheard songs (via Gigwise). Surely someone must’ve heard them, or else they have no clue what they are releasing to the public. The boxset will consist of the 7 studio albums, 65 unreleased tracks, more than 130 rarities, 3 DVDs, and a book with photos. There will also be an interview with the band, and a limited 7″ vinyl. It will cost $1 million

If you have some of the albums and don’t want to buy the entire boxset, you can get the albums individually, each with their own second disc of B-sides and rarities. The aptly named boxset will contain 21 discs, and will be released on July 30, 21 years after their debut of Leisure. I guess with this boxset and the Hyde Park show in London, this really will be the definitive end to Blur.

Morning Music Notes – SXSW and St. Patrick’s Day Hangover Edition

Apologies for the sporadic posts last week – I was chasing leprechauns (and women) in Ireland, and thought drinking top notch Guinness was more important than giving you music news. I don’t regret the decision, and only slightly regret the 12 hour Guinness session.

SXSW Wrap Up

As Rich pointed out in last week’s Morning Music Notes, Bruce Springsteen had some pretty awesome things to say last week. If you like Bruce and have 50 minutes to spare, don’t throw on one of his albums – listen to his South by Southwest Keynote Address.

The Boss also performed with Arcade Fire and Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave fame) and a few others. Check out the video of the Woody Guthrie cover, This Land is Your Land.

Morning Music Notes – Happy iPhone Release Day!

So the iPhone 4S is out (or about to be out and you are waiting in line like an IDIOT!). Don’t feel bad if you’re in a line – even millionaires have to line up – Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is the first person in line at the Apple store in Los Gatos, California (via Dvice). NO ONE could’ve given him a free phone?! Steve Jobs didn’t leave him one in his will? Maybe I should’ve read the whole article, as it turns out he has received 2 phones (perhaps from the sources I suggested).

“Woz showed up on his Segway early Thursday afternoon, and plans to wait overnight until the store opens at 8 a.m. Friday. He said he would kill the time by signing autographs, answering emails on his iPad 2 and chatting online with fans from around the world. Wozniak admitted that Apple is sending him two of the phones, but says he likes to get in the trenches with all the other Apple fans.”

He drives a segway! Does he wear a cape, too?!

Occupy Wall Street Continues

For those uninformed souls, Occupy Wall Street is NOT a rock festival. However, musicians have been showing up to the financial hood of NYC and making appears. Mr. Kanye West showed up, and now Tom Morello, guitarist supreme from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, has also shown up. If I were my bookie I wouldn’t cut off Pete’s fingers, HINT HINTI would’ve had Morello at the top of my list of people who would’ve shown up (ignore the fact that he showed up at the event in Los Angeles already). The guy has a degree in Political Science from the little known school called HARVARD. A guitar god AND brains – ladies? Morello now performs under his ‘political alter-ego’, the Nightwatchman. Via Billboard:

“Wearing a cap bearing the words “Solidarity Forever,” Morello opened with “The Fabled City” from his 2008 Nightwatchman album of the same name. Guitarist Carl Restivo, Morello’s bandmate from Street Sweeper Social Club, joined in the four-song set, which within minutes evolved into a peaceful hootenanny against the backdrop of big buildings and metal gates. Following a stripped-down version of “Save the Hammer for the Man,” a duet he recorded with Ben Harper, Morello continued to engage the group in bursts of expression.”

“The Guthrie classic “This Land Is Your Land” came next, and Morello strapped on a harmonica for his Nightwatchman closer, “World Wide Rebel Songs,” which got the crowd jumping.

“Together we sing,” Morello instructed the crowd with a smile. “Loudly.” Most of the spectators wielded some form of camera or phone to capture this latest musician to appear on behalf of Occupy Wall Street.

Check out footage of Morello at Occupy Wall Street.

For those who were late to the Rage Against the Machine scene, they were a pretty politically active group themselves. They even teamed with documentary maker Michael Moore for the music video Sleep Now in the Fire, which actually shut down Wall Street during the trading day! Oh, the pre-9/11 days! Check it out below.

Google to Ready MP3 Store

To quote Adele (and who doesn’t like to do that?), ‘rumour has it’ that Google are bankrupt! about to launch their own MP3 store (via SlashGear).

http://www.slashgear.com/google-gearing-up-for-mp3-store-launch-according-to-rumor-14188037/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+slashgear+%28SlashGear%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

Currently, many Android phone users use Amazon to get MP3s onto their phone. A Google MP3 store would be a logical competiting point.

“The new rumor is something different from the Google Music service and would be a direct sales store. This one rumor is not hard to believe though with Google already selling books and movies. Adding music is something that I am surprised hasn’t happened already.”
