He Just Won’t Stop: New Paul McCartney Album
69 year old Sir Paul has a new wife. With new found inspiration, The Cute Beatle (as I like to call him) has also recorded a new album. The album will be out February 7 and is called My Valentine (via Consequence of Sound). It’s like the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for Baby Boomers!
“The new record is said to feature romantic staples of ole in addition to originals. McCartney cites the music his family reared him on as influence. “This will sound like the years between 1920-1940,” he explained, “the time when my father was 20. These are songs I heard. My family, my uncles, everybody sang.”
“In addition to covers, there will be tracks written by the man himself, following in the style of the rest of the album. Produced by Timmy Lipuma, the record features guest appearances by jazz pianist and singer, and Mrs. Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, as well as double bassist John Clayton.”
This will be….interesting.
Beach Boys to Reunite for FIFTIETH Anniversary
Baby boomers (who are the core audience of this website…..) are shuddering at the anniversary number in the headline. Anyway, following the recent trend of, well, every band that has broken up, the Beach Boys’ original line up is re-uniting to record a new album and to tour (via Gigwise). The original line up is Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks.
“Frontman Brian Wilson said of the reunion: This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again.”
So new music from Paul McCartney AND the Beach Boys – my time machine DID work – it is the mid 1960s again! Now, where is my abacus so that I can count all of my schillings and half schillings that I’m going to make from this thing?!
City and Colour, Feist, Deadmau5, Drake to Play 2012 Juno Awards
The Junos, insultingly called the Canadian Grammys, will be rocked by City and Colour, Feist, Deadmau5, and Drake in 2012 (via Billboard). Well, maybe City and Colour will “light rock” the show, but that’s getting a little technical.
“Coming off of the most-watched Juno Awards broadcast on record, we are excited to continue to bring the nation the biggest and most spectacular night of Canadian music all year,” said Phil King, president CTV programming and sports in a statement. “The already diverse line-up announced today is just the beginning of what we have in store for this year’s broadcast.”
No word if the audience will be forced to wear those Deadmau5 Mickey Mouse-esque helmets.
Howard Stern on America’s Got Talent – What.The.Fuck.
Shitty Reality show (I think “shitty” + “reality show” is redundant) America’s Got Talent has replaced judge Piers Morgan with ‘shock jock’ Howard Stern (via MTV). Why is Howard doing this? Millions upon millions of dollars helps, but divorce aside, he already has hundreds of millions from his satellite radio deal plus options.
“I’m going to be Piers [Morgan] on steroids,” Stern promised, in reference to the former lead judge. “It’s going to be a no-nonsense judge … I’m going to go there as a serious judge … It’s gonna be something else … I am very excited. This nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less-than-talented people has got to stop,” Stern thundered. “Under my administration there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning for the year. If people think I’m the crazy man, I am not. I am the voice of reason,” he said, railing against some of the acts that have gotten through in the past that he would not abide by. “Goofy acts are not going through.”
Goofy hosts though, different story.
A Muppets Impersonator Covers Mumford and Sons’ White Blank Page
The headline is obscure, but bear with me. The Muppets are all the rage again, with a new movie and soundtrack. On Toronto radio station Edge 102′s morning show, a blind man (Dereck Welsman) sung Mumford and Sons’ White Blank Page (via Chart Attack). It’s actually pretty good. Listen to what was sung on the Dean Blundell Show and wonder “why?”

Watch! The Beach Boys – That’s Why God Made the Radio (new version)
It’s the first day of summer here in Canada. I assume it’s that way across the northern hemisphere (have a good winter southern hemisphere!) and to celebrate, PeteHatesMusic brings you a new video from a band whose sound has become synonymous with the summertime, The Beach Boys.
Here at PHM, we told you a couple of months ago about The Beach Boys reuniting to make a new album called That’s Why God Made the Radio.
We also let you take a look at a cutesy, cartoon-y video for the nostalgia-tinged first single, also called That’s Why God Made the Radio. That particular video looked like it was designed for preschool television aimed at teaching kids to read, and was really just a promo for the new record.
Now the folks at the record company have made a proper, new video for the song, one aimed at the youth market no doubt and aging hipsters recalling their youth. As you can imagine, the vid is set around the beach-area and looks more like a GAP/Old Navy commercial than anything, with young people looking stylish and having fun. The actual Beach Boys show up for a brief moment at the video’s end. I feel bad for Brian Wilson, I think he knows musical geniuses have better things to do than high-five paid actors in promo-clips. The song itself personifies the summer sound, so enjoy the video and the upcoming warm season.

Watch! The Beach Boys – That’s Why God Made the Radio
The Beach Boys announced that they were coming out with a new album, their first in nearly 2 decades with the full (surviving) line up, on their 50th year together, no less. They gave us a snippet of the song before, but now we get the whole thing in the official video for lead single That’s Why God Made the Radio. Well, it sounds like the Beach Boys. Call and response, layered vocals, California dream pop feel. No boundaries pushed but fans will be happy to have a new song from the lads. Listen to it below.

New Beach Boys Album out on June 5
Yesterday, we let you preview a track from the upcoming 50th anniversary tribute album to the Beach Boys. Not one for tributes (I’m making this up, they might actually LOVE tributes), the Beach Boys have decided to write an album of their own. The Beach Boys are set to release a NEW album on June 5 (via Consequence of Sound). This is the first album from all of the surviving members of the gang since 1995, when they released Stars and Stripes Vol. 1. You know you’ve been around for awhile when the term “surviving members” comes into play. Check out the video snippet below, which has a bit of the lead single, ”That’s Why God Made the Radio”. I’m curious about the remix, ”That’s Why God Made the Internet” (note: this MIGHT not exist).
The Highest Selling Vinyl on Record Store Day in the UK Is…..
…Noel Gallagher?! Despite hearing about great records, such as the bizarro Flaming Lips collaboration record, the new Arctic Monkeys vinyl, and tons more, Noel Gallagher has risen to the top in the UK, with his new EP ‘Songs From The Great White North’ (via NME). Arctic Monkeys finished second with R U Mine?, while the “We’re Not Playing the London Olympics” Sex Pistols re-release of Anarchy in the UK was third in the record charts. Early numbers show that vinyl sales are up about 50% over last year’s Record Store Day, with some stores reporting numbers that are double from last year. This report sounds entirely scientific.

Listen! 4 Songs by The Flaming Lips, Including Collaborations with Chris Martin (Coldplay), Ke$ha, and Prefuse 73, plus a Beach Boys cover
It was a busy weekend in the world of the Flaming Lips, so we’re going to catch up in one giant post. On Saturday’s Record Store Day, Los Lips dropped the extremely limited and collaborative LP, The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends. You can see the official video for their collaboration with Prefuse 73 called Supermoon Made Me Want to Pee (whatever the hell that means). The video is an animated video, which is fitting to the franctic, end of world vibe the song gives. Also included in this Flaming Lips post is their collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, for the song I Don’t Want You To Die, as well as their song with Ke$ha. Yup, a very diverse set of collaborators. The last 2 songs are audio rips and not official videos, so they might get taken down.
There are some interesting comments on the YouTube videos, with people questioning their talent, the effect of drugs on their brains, and people jumping to their defense. Have the Lips lost it, did they never have it, or are they still awesome? Decide for yourself.
Also below is a rip of the song the Flaming Lips contributed to the Beach Boys Pet Sounds tribute album, which is running with the music magazine MOJO as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. The Flaming Lips applied their touch to God Only Knows, and you can listen to it below.

Drummer from The Band, Levon Helm, Dies at Age of 71
First Dick Clark, now Levon Helm – the 71 year old drummer from The Band passed away yesterday. To youngsters who don’t know them – yes, they were actually called The Band. A few days ago, his family had posted that Helm was in the final stages of cancer. One of the most influential drummers of his time, Helm touched and inspired many. Some quotes making the rounds yesterday:
Bob Dylan: “In response to Levon’s passing: He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I’m going to miss him, as I’m sure a whole lot of others will too.”
Patrick Carney (@PatrickCarney from the Black Keys): “one of the best singers and drummers and it all is sad.”
Tom Morello (@tmorello from Rage Against the Machine): “Hey Levon Helm, thanks man for carrying The Weight of that backbeat (and great vocals) for decades. Inspired so many”
Elton John: “When I heard The Band’s Music from Big Pink, their music changed my life. And Levon was a big part of that band. Nigel Olson, my drummer, will tell you that every drummer that heard him was influenced by him. He was the greatest drummer and a wonderful singer and just a part of my life that was magical. They once flew down to see me in Philadelphia and I couldn’t believe it. They were one of the greatest bands of all time. They really changed the face of music when their records came out. I had no idea he was sick so I’m very dismayed and shocked that he died so quickly. But now my son [Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John] has his name.”

Official Bonnaroo 2012 Festival Line Up Announced
So that Bonnaroo line up poster this morning was fairly accurate. Subtract Prince, Jack White, Drake, add The Beach Boys, Skrillex, the Roots, you get the picture. Instead of comparing what was and what could’ve been (which is the story of my life), check out the official 2012 poster below. Line up includes Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, festival stalwarts Phish, Bon Iver, Black Star, The Shins – I’m sure you can read, so that’s all I’ll type out for you. The festival is June 7-10 in Manchester, Tennessee, and you can check out the ticket information right here.
