S.S. Coachella – Cash Cow or More Fun for Everyone?
Coachella famously expanded from one weekend festival to two in Indio, California this past year. Now they are moving from the desert to the sea – promoters Golden Voice have announced the S.S. Coachella, with 2 different December cruises (via Consequence of Sound). Now instead of hooking up with chicks in dirty, hot tents, you can have the cruise ship bar and your bedroom right there! Oh, and there’s some music happening, too, such as Hot Chip, Girl Talk, Pulp, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Simian Mobile Disco, Cloud Nothings, !!!, El-P, Black Lips, Grimes, DJ Z-Trip, The Gaslamp Killer, and more, of course. Can you say dance party ship?!
I get seasick and would spend the entire cruise puking to the beats of Hot Chip. The ships head to either Bahamas from Dec. 16 – 19, or Jamaica from Dec. 19-23. There’s even events like wine taste with James Murphy. I’m sure ANY event with Grimes would be insane and worth the price of admission alone.
Now at H&M – More Pouty Lips, with Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rel is the face and voice of clothing giant H&M. She’ll appear in printed ads and video, and she’ll cover Blue Velvet as part of the campaign. The first ad shows her wearing an ugly pink sweater, but since she’s wearing it, even I want to buy it (via Hollywood Reporter).
Polaris Prize Shortlist Names 10 Albums – Did Yours Make It?
The prestigious Canadian music award, the Polaris Prize, have named their 10 short listed albums for 2012 (and a sweet $30,000) (via Rolling Stone). The 10 albums fighting (politely, since we’re Canadian) are Drake – Take Care, Feist – Metals, Japandroids – Celebration Rock, Grimes – Visions, Fucked Up – David Comes to Life, Handsome Furs – Sound Kapital, Kathleen Edwards – Voyageur, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan – YT // ST, Cadence Weapon – Hope in Dirt City, and Cold Specks – I Predict a Graceful Expulsion. I actually don’t know several of these albums! Given the hype behind Fucked Up, they stand a good chance of winning. My early nod goes to Grimes though.
More Gun Violence in Toronto, Drake Calls for Peace, So Does Pete
Toronto, a safe city with few homicides (less in a year than some US cities have in a week), has had an uncharacteristically bad year in this department. The latest incident involved a shooting at a street party, in which a 14 year old and a 23 year old were killed, with two dozen more injured (via Gigwise). Drake (recent Polaris Prize Shortlist nominee!) has taken to Twitter to speak out on the incident, saying “My condolences go out to the family and friends of Shyanne Charles and Joshua Yasay. Senseless violence in Toronto has to stop.”
I leave the city for one year and all hell breaks loose?! Fix this shit for when I’m back in October, alright?

Hurricane Sandy Benefit Parts 2 and 3: Grizzly Bear, Cults, The Antlers, More
December 12 might have it’s fancy, big name artists at their Hurricane Sandy benefit, but there’s another benefit that might be more your style. On December 14, acts such as Grizzly Bear, Sleigh Bells, the Antlers, and Cults will take to Terminal 5 in New York City, with proceeds going to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City (via Pitchfork). Sort of sounds like it’s a made up fund, but it has its own website, so it must be real.
There’s a third benefit on the books, and surprisingly Los Angeles is helping out. There will be the awesomely named “We Hate Hurricanes: A Night of Comedy to Benefit Victims of Hurricane Sandy” that will feature Beck, the overrated Aziz Ansari, Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Sarah Silverman, and more. Does this mean all these acts or going to sing, or that Beck needs to crack some jokes?
Andrew W.K. and the Middle East – The Story That Just Won’t Die
Andrew W.K. was supposed to go the Bahrain and the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Ambassador. Then he wasn’t. Then he issued a statement. And now, he said fuck it, he’s going to Bahrain anyway (via NME).
Bahrain have personally invited him, which is weird since Bahrain isn’t actually a real person. Andrew W.K. went on to say “In the face of a lot of disappointment and confusion there has been an incredible amount of support, especially from Bahrain. They’ve now invited me personally, regardless of whether or not my own country wants me to go, and we’re actively working on that.”

Love Me Do Turns 50
It was 50 years ago today
Sgt Pepper taught the band to playthat the Beatles released their first single, Love Me Do (via Guardian). Sadly they were never heard from again. Well, the single did okay, hitting number 17 in the charts after 12 weeks. The Beatles were originally asked by producer George Martin to record a cover song for their first single, but they (wisely) elected for their own material. The catchy ditty is not particularly strong lyrically – note the numerous one syllable words. However, it is harmonic, and has a harmonica, and is a good first single. Funny enough, when re-released 18 months later (at the height of the Beatlesmania pandemic), it hit Number 1 in the USA. Celebrate the landmark occasion by reminding your parents how old they are.
Indie Label Domino to Release Remix Album
Domino are compiling a remix album called Motion Sickness, which will feature remixes of their past and present artists (via Gigwise). The artists being remixed are Hot Chip, Austra, Franz Ferdinand, Junior Boys, and The Kills to name a few, with acts such as Justice, Matthew Dear, and Daphni doing the remixes. The album will be out on December 3, and the full tracklist is below.

Watch! Sleigh Bells – End of the Line
Noise pop band (yes, this is a genre) Sleigh Bells have released a new video via Pitchfork.tv (yes, this is also a thing). The video is lifted from recent album, Reign of Terror (which describes what happened when my cat learned how to throw knives). The song is End of the Line (which describes what happened when I learned to throw knives back at my cat). The clip shows the Brooklyn band members Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss riding BMXs, making viewers wishing their were doing the same, instead of being engaged in knife fights with their cats. Check out the video below.

Morning Music Notes – the Irony Burglar
Kanyé West’s LA home burgled
In a clear bid to define irony, someone broke into Kanyé West’s Hollywood Hills home yesterday, while Kanyé and Jay-Z were on the road for their Watch the Throne tour. Not much more to this story beyond the irony, frankly… but the irony is good!

A Mighty Tour Announcement – Refused & Sleigh Bells!
One of the mightiest bands ever – Refused – has re-formed and gone out on tour, and PeteHatesMusic.com staff couldn’t be happier about it. And they have announced that their supoprt on this tour will be the also mighty (but slightly more cute) Sleigh Bells.
Refused re-formed in 2012 after breaking up in 1998. During their hiatus, lead singer Dennis Lyxzén formed The International Noise Conspiracy. Kerrang named their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come #13 on their list of the most influential albums of all time.

Morning Music Notes – Happy G.O.O.D. Friday Everyone
Yup, I stole the G.O.O.D. Friday pun from Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music Fridays, but today is actually Good Friday, so I’m forgiven, right? Wrong.
Listen to new Kanye West track, Mercy, featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz
Kanye West announced he’d be dropping a new track today, since no one releases songs, they only drop them. The track is Mercy, and features a slew of guest stars. Not as great as his last 2 brilliant albums, but then again, I didn’t like the first track from Watch the Throne (H.A.M.) and that album turned out more than alright. The track is expected to be on the G.O.O.D. Music collaborative album, and is rumoured to also feature songs with Frank Ocean and Jay Electronica. Give Mercy a listen below.

Pitchfork Festival Adds More Acts (Who Won’t Be At Benicassim or Optimus Alive)
July 13-15 is one good weekend for worldwide festivals. You have the Benicassim festival in Spain, you have Optimus Alive in Portugal, and you have the Pitchfork festival in the United States. The Pitchfork festival just got a whole lot better, so those of you stateside are in for a treat. Pitchfork have added a bunch of acts, including Beach House, Wild Flag, Real Estate, Cults, and Atlas Sound, amongst many others (via Pitchfork, of course). These acts are added to the lineup that already includes Vampire Weekend, Feist, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, Dirty Projectors, Flying Lotus, AraabMUZIK, A$AP Rocky, the Field, and many others. So throw on some ironic clothing, a snarky button, and get ready to bash some bands!

Morning Music Notes – Instead of Slash, He Got a Stash…of Child Porn
Man Tries To Download New Slash Album, Gets Child Porn Instead
That’s the oldest excuse in the book, right? A man from Hull, United Kingdom, tried to (illegally) download an album by ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash. Instead, he accidentally (or so he claims) got a stash of child pornography (via Gigwise). The man, Nigel Robinson, owned up to the fact he tried to illegally download an album, because he was concerned that someone was doing something worse than he was, child porn obviously being far more detrimental than a mediocre Slash album.
“When I opened some of them [the files] up, I realised they were young girls. I immediately called my wife,” Robinson told BBC News. “I was panicking. I asked her what she thought I should do and her response was to call the police. I was willing to take it on the chin for downloading the music. I half expected to get arrested for that but felt it was important because someone was obviously uploading this.”
Sadly, since this is now a criminal matter and Robinson is being investigated, he is not allowed to have unsupervised access with children (including his daughter) while the case is being studied. Maybe honesty isn’t the best policy? Or maybe he should get better taste in music.

Listen! Sleigh Bells – Comeback Kid
Brooklyn duo, Sleigh Bells, are about to release their second LP, Reign of Terror, which contrasts the title of their first album, Treats. The first single from the album will be Comeback Kid. You can listen to it below, and stare at the artwork, indicating the potential Reign of Terror the band plans on unleashing.
