RHCP, The Black Keys, Jack White, Neil Young Heading to Austin City Limits
The Austin, Texas festival that isn’t SXSW is Austin City Limits, and it takes place October 12-14 this year at Zilker Park. Playing this year will be the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Keys, Jack White, and Neil Young as headliners, being joined by Florence + the Machine, Weezer, the Avett Brothers, M83, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Metric, Stars, the Shins, Rufus Wainwright, Childish Gambino, Gotye, and more. If you don’t believe me, pop on over to their website to see the “more”. I went to this festival in 2005 and 3 things stand out – 1) it was over 100 degrees and the beverage of choice was surprisingly water 2) it was windy (due to nearby Hurricane Rita) and therefore very dusty and 3) everyone has these lame chairs they bring and sit in them between bands, preventing people who can stand up from walking past them to the front of the stage. Lame!
Pearl Jam and – surprise – Jay-Z to Headline Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival
If you start and curator a festival, and you’re a musician, I guess people can’t complain when you top the bill. Jay-Z’s Made in America revealed some of it’s initial line up for the September 1-2 festival at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Pearl Jam will be a headliner, with appearances at the festival from Skrillex, Santigold, Passion Pit, Miike Snow, D’Angelo, Rick Ross, Odd Future, Janelle Monáe, Dirty Projectors, Calvin Harris, and others (via Consequence of Sound). Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 5am EST – can that be right? Maybe the counter is for when I can purchase tickets in the UK, at a “reasonable” hour of 10am.

Morning Music Notes – Let Me Tell You How It Will Be
New Orleans’ Voodoo Experience 2013 Lands PJ, NIN and HTDA
Okay, I got a little lazy in the headline, so let me expand my acronyms. It’s the 15th anniversary of the New Orleans festival, Voodoo Experience. They somehow roped in Trent Reznor to work extra hard – probably with two pay cheques – as he will perform with both Nine Inch Nails and How to Destroy Angels (via Consequence of Sound). Also headlining the November 1-3 festival is Pearl Jam.
A few non-headliners have been announced, and they include Bassnectar, Paramore, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Calvin Harris, Desaparecidos, The Gaslight Anthem, Boys Noize, Afrojack, Alkaline Trio, Cults, Big Gigantic, and Robert DeLong. A three day pass will set you back $175, plus camping options.
You Can’t Run from the Tax Man, Lauren Hill
Actually, the headline applies to everyone. As previously reported, Lauren Hill neglected the lovely tax man in the years 2005 through 2007; years in which she earned $1.8 million (about $1.8M more than I did). She pled guilty in June 2012, and with sentencing coming up next week, could face up to three years in the slammer (via Billboard).
Oddly, Lauren Hill said that threats against her and her family made her leave the music industry and then unable to meet her tax dues. Not sure why she didn’t set aside money from her income to pay it back like the rest of us. Being rich sucks, eh Lauren?

My Teenage Self is Excited – New Temple of the Dog Album On the Way?!
Temple of the Dog are one of those 1990s acts that we wish could’ve gone on forever
like Spice Girls. The band combined members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, including Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, and Mike McCready, to name a few, and released only one album. Unless he was lying or confused, we will get another taste of the 1990s alt-rock super group, as today Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell announced on his Reddit AMA that there is a new record on the way.Or this might not be true at all, since he was responding to multiple questions at once in the totally 1990s layout of Reddit (seriously – why does Reddit look so awful?). Question 1 was “Any chance of another Temple Of The Dog album?” while the second question was “I was at the Soundgarden show in Hyde Park last year. It was an amazing gig. When it started to hammer down with rain in the middle of Black Hole Sun the whole thing jumped up several notches vibe-wise, and stayed there for the rest of the show. Did you notice that, and what was it about the bleak weather that added so much to the performance and atmosphere?” Cornell replied YES!, making it unclear which question to was yesing (or if he was serious at all). He didn’t respond to subsequent clarification questions.
However, he did also reply with YES when asked “Will you and Eddie Vedder make some more music, please? I love both of your voices.” He also said “sure” when asked to reform Audioslave, and we’re pretty sure that ain’t happening. Okay, so maybe (read: probably) Temple of the Dog isn’t happening at all. Dare to dream!
Morning Music Notes – Collaborations Everywhere!
Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival Pulls Out All the Stops
The inaugural Made In America festival, curated and topped by Jay-Z, certainly had a lot of surprises. Sadly, free beer was not upon the surprises. To some it all up in one run on sentence: Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music made a surprise appearance (as if Kanye showing up is a surprise), President Barack Obama had a pre-recorded announcement play, and Jay-Z and Pearl Jam collaborated on 99 Problems (via Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound).
We have video proof of this stuff, too, courtesy of Mr. World Premiere. Check out sets by the G.O.O.D. Music crew (Kanye West, Common, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Pusha T), Jay-Z’s set (with President Obama talking around the 5:00 mark), and the somewhat shaky filmed collaboration between Pearl Jam and Jay-Z. Yes, the President of the biggest super power in the world is talking about people working hard like Jay-Z. I bet Jay never thought that would EVER happen when he was pushing drugs in the street 20 years ago!

Jay-Z Adds Big Names to Made in America Festival, Becomes Executive Producer of NBA 2K13
Jay-Z’s new Made in America festival already boasted a pretty good line up. Joining Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Passion Pit and others at the September 1/2 festival in Philadelphia are Drake, Chris Cornell, The Hives, DJ Shadow, and Run-DMC (via Consequence of Sound). There’s still tickets on sale, so go grab one – it’s a killer line up.
You would think that being a new father, owning an NBA team, and running a festival would keep most people more than busy enough. Jay-Z isn’t most men, and won’t stop until he gets zero hours of sleep. Adding to his list of tasks –
a new reality show with Carrot Topexecutive producing the NBA video game NBA 2K13. Couldn’t he have worked on NBA Jam instead? I’d LOVE to hear Hova say “Boom shakalaka!” And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll see Beyonce as a cheerleader (damn!) or Jay-Z appearing as the new point guard for theNew JerseyBrooklyn Nets.Jay-Z will be picking the soundtrack for the video game (via Consequence of Sound). Oddly, the soundtrack consists of 95% Jay-Z songs, 4% Beyonce songs, and 1% Kanye West songs. Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad. In reality, it does feature a lot of Jay-Z and Kanye West songs, as well as Coldplay, U2, Nas, Daft Punk, Santigold, Puff “Where have you been” Daddy, and Dirty Projectors. The game is out October 2, and check out the full tracklist below.

Unrelated: Willie Nelson Covers Pearl Jam; Eddie Vedder Postpones Solo Tour Dates
It would be awesome if those 2 thoughts in the headline were related. Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam is so appalled at Willie Nelson’s Pearl Jam cover that he decides to postpone his tour. In reality, there are 2 separate stories. Story the first: Willie Nelson has decided to cover Pearl Jam’s Just Breathe on his upcoming album, Heroes. You can listen to the cover over at Rolling Stone.
The second story deals with singer Eddie Vedder and his temporary nerve damage on his right arm. From PearlJam.com, “Eddie Vedder has announced the postponement of his 15-city U.S. solo tour today due to temporary nerve damage in his right arm, the result of a back injury sustained earlier this year.”
Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis explains, “After having worked aggressively with doctors and physical therapists for the last eight weeks to repair the damage, the intensity of the injury and time needed to heal has made it impossible to play the shows as scheduled. There was hope up until the last minute that the treatments would be successful. Sincerest apologies go out to those who have made plans and bought tickets. Eddie is frustrated beyond measure, but remains positive that come this summer all will be back in good form.”
The dates are now in October, November, and December, so check out PJ’s website for more info. However, Pearl Jam will still be one of the headlining acts at the Isle of Wight Festival from June 22-24. Who are you fooling, Eddie?!
