Morning Music Notes – iPhone > All of Microsoft; Apple > All of Us

Is Apple the Most Valuable Company of All-Time?

Remember when Apple was pretty much extinct about 20 years ago, before the Second Coming of Steve Jobs? Well, they have hit what people are calling an all-time record high for all companies, with the company’s valuation at $624 billion (via Digital Trends). This makes it the most valuable company in Wall Street history.

However, as Tech Crunch points out, this does not account for inflation. Inflation relates to those stories your parents told you about a beer costing them 5 cents when they were kids. In 1967, IBM was worth a present-day value of $1.3 trillion. So a trillion is worth more than a billion? I probably missed that in school. IBM’s $192.3 billion valuation in 1967, multiplied by the inflation rate of 6.85 gives you a headache historical leader when accounting for inflation. Suck on that, Apple!

Shocking fact: I wear women’s clothing ALL THE TIME The iPhone, which didn’t exist 5 years ago, has higher sales than all of Microsoft’s products (via iPhone in Canada). To quote Forbes, the iPhone had sales “more than Windows, Office, Xbox, Bing, Windows Phone, and every other product that Microsoft has created since 1975. In the quarter ended March 31, 2012, iPhone had sales of $22.7 billion; Microsoft Corporation, $17.4 billion.” Suck on that, Microsoft!

Green Day Teams with Angry Birds

With each new album a band makes, new marketing and promotional ideas are sought. It usually involves bands hopping on the latest trends, and consists of increasingly more unorthodox cross-promotions. The latest oddity: punk (read: emo) band, Green Day have teamed with mobile phone game Angry Birds (which I have never played!) to turn the band members into pigs in a new version of the game (via Digital Trends). “I thought they were already pigs” says Captain Lazy Joke Maker.

The new game is a 10-level one called Angry Birds Friends, and will have the band members as evil pigs. Check out the promo video below, and try to unlock songs by beating levels, rather than easily downloading the songs on torrent sites online.

Virgin festival 2012

Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 26, so kill the large rats in your basement and look for your camping gear – it sounds like you’ll need it (assuming you like pop stuff like Rizzle Kicks and Olly Murs). A touch disappointed, but will likely go for Noel. Watch a 10 minute promo and band showcase below to see what I mean by pop stuff.

Morning Music Notes – A Super Bowl For the Birds

Super Bowl Summary

If you’re reading this in the afternoon, congratulations, you’re likely hungover from the Super Bowl! If you think the Super Bowl is some new band, well, all hope is lost. So yesterday was the NFL’s final game, the Super Bowl, and with it comes all sorts of music news. Madonna was the half time show act, with her new, youthful sidekicks, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., plus additional guests in Cee Lo Green and LMFAO. Surprisingly, no controversy from Madonna – what did the bookies pay for that?! She just sort of tripped on some bleachers that were part of the stage, but her skirt didn’t fly over her head (for once). However, M.I.A. caused some problems, flipping the middle finger to impressionable youth worldwide. NBC and the NFL apologized on M.I.A.’s behalf, so now she can sleep at night.

If you missed it, and want to hear a few Madonna songs AND be flipped the bird by M.I.A., there are 13 minutes of viewing for you below. Seriously though, flipping the bird is nowhere near as bad as a nipple. And both are laughable in Europe as offensive – you can buy The Daily Star newspaper in Britain and see a pair of tits on Page 3 (this might be part of my daily routine). Watch NBC try to blur the action about a second too late. Someone is fired!

Watch (with caution)! Madonna featuring M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj – Give Me All Your Luvin’

Ahead of the trio appearing at the Super Bowl this Sunday Sunday Sunday, Madonna has released a new video for her song, Give Me All Your Luvin’, featuring M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. Madonna, who was the only musician still around from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, looks a little too wrinkle-free for her many years. Give Me All Your Luvin’ is what Madonna likely says to her plastic surgeons. So, do M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj help broaden Madonna’s appeal and name to the younger crowd? Not that she needs it, but yes, perhaps a little bit. A little controversy in front of a billion viewers on Sunday wouldn’t hurt, either.

It’s 2012 – Do You Still Care About Ringo Starr?

If you answered yes to the Ringo Starr headline, then boy, do I have news for you. Ringo Starr has released his latest album, and he wasted no brain power to name it. Ringo 2012 is the album, and it is his 17th solo album, following a massive catalogue of releases with the Beatles. NME is streaming the 9 song album, so head on over there to listen to it.

Morning Music Notes – Scott Weiland Still Likes Snow

Need a Halloween Idea? Don’t Pick Nicki Minaj

So Halloween is on Monday, meaning the par-tays are this weekend. What are you going as? If you’re still out of a costume, and looking to go as a musician, perhaps do not go as Nicki Minaj. While she would make for a wicked costume, it turns out Nicki Minaj is the most searched Halloween costume (via MTV). Behind Boy George?! I demand a recount.

“Minaj bested the likes of Charlie Sheen, Captain America, Smurfette (Katy Perry’s gonna be pissed!) and, oddly enough, Wilfred, the titular star of F/X’s oddball comedy, on the list. Overall, she ranks fourth on the list of most-searched Halloween costumes, trailing only “Angry Birds,” “Black Swan” and “Playboy Bunny.”

If you are seriously contemplating going as Nicki, you are unoriginal check out some ways to dress up as her.

Scott Weiland Does a Christmas Cover Album – Listen to a Track

What.the.fuck. Don’t let anyone tell you drugs will not affect your brain. Scott Weiland, of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver fame, is recording a Christmas album (via Rolling Stone). The man with a wicked grunge voice and singer of 2 popular bands, has gone the Christmas cover album route. This is not exactly new news (the album came out this week), but his reasons why, and a first listen, are new.

“I’ve been listening to these songs my entire life,” he tells Rolling Stone. “It was a great honor to do this album. I’ve never recorded something commercially before where I’m crooning,” he says. “But if you listen to my solo albums it shows that there is such a major difference in the music that influences me and the way that I use my voice. I look at my voice as an instrument. My two favorite singers, John Lennon and David Bowie, had very different voices that they used depending on the vibe of the song.”

“Some of the tracks stick to familiar arrangement, while others are more daring. “We wanted to do a reggae-ish version of ‘Silent Night,’” says Weiland. “And there’s a sort of swigging version of ‘What Child Is This?’ and we have a bossa nova, Sixties kitschy version of one of the songs. It all worked out quite amazing.”

Actually, it doesn’t really sound like Weiland, because of the crooning. Give Winter Wonderland a listen here.

The Rihanna Lovefest Continues

Coldplay’s new album, Mylo Xyloto, has a radio-friendly (yet still pretty rad) collabration with Rihanna, called Princess of China. It appears Coldplay have grown to like Rihanna and have even moved to stalking her covering her songs. Rihanna’s song, We Found Love, gets the Rihanna treatment during their recent stop at BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge. Check out both the cover and the original below.
