Morning Music Notes – There’s Money in This Industry That We Blog In After All

Giving the Fans What They Want – A Marcus Mumford and Justin Timberlake Collaboration?

Mumford & Sons frontman, Marcus Mumford, has recorded a song with pop singer, Justin Timberlake (via NME). I’ve always thought that pop music needed more banjos.

The track is for the soundtrack of the new Coen Brothers movie, Inside Llewyn Davis (which sounds like a p0rn movie I watched the other day). Coincidentally – or most likely, not – the film stars Carey Mulligan, who is married to Marcus Mumford. She is trying to make it as a musician in 1960s New York. So wait, there’s time travel, too?

Music Industry Isn’t Going Bankrupt!

Thanks to bloggers The music industry saw an increase in worldwide revenues last year for the first time in 13 years (via Consequence of Sound). The music biz (as cool kids call it) generated $16.5 billion last year, which is equivalent to the typical dinner bill for Axl Rose. The increase was 0.3% over the previous year.

The study by NPD Group notes that music file sharing has apparently dropped significantly, although no figures were provided. Digital downloaded accounted for a massive $5.6 billion of the revenue. This report comes at the same time that Live Nation announced a massive loss of $163 million in 2012 (via Hollywood Reporter). Apparently having double digit service charges doesn’t make a company profitable.

Grammy Awards Had 28 Million Viewers, Needed Someone Famous to Die Right Before Show Again

The Grammy Awards had massive viewership in 2012, thanks in part to Whitney Houston dying the weekend of the show. Sunday night’s show was down from the 40 million in 2012, to an average of 28.37 million (via Hollywood Reporter). Couldn’t someone have killed Chris Brown or something? The 28 million viewers makes it the second most watched Grammys since 1993 (with 2012 being the most watched).

Anyone notice that random guy who appeared on stage with Adele? Check out the video below, and watch J Lo dismiss him with her magic hands, and he goes trotting backstage. Does he look familiar? He’s the guy that started kissing Will Smith on a red carpet before. He’s a Ukrainian TV presenter who apparently likes stunts.

Dan Auerbach Going Through a Divorce?

Apparently PeteHatesMusic is now some shitty gossip site! Spinner points out that The Black Keys singer Dan Auerbach was alone at the Grammys on Sunday because (promise you won’t say is a Lonely Boy, Pete) he is going through a divorce with his wife Stephanie Gonis. The two of them have a four year old daughter, Sadie Little Auerbach. Drummer Patrick Carney previous went through a divorce, and now Dan has ample material for lyrics for the band’s next album, tentatively titled My Wife is a Gigantic Bitch.

Stream! Jim James – Regions of Light and Sound of God (entire album)

My Morning Jacket frontman, the bearded wonder that is Jim James, is about to release a solo album. Having already heard Know Til Now and A New Life, anticipation has been high for the album (except for by people who hates the songs). The album is called Regions of Light and Sound of God and is out February 5.

However, we can bring you the NPR stream of the entire album right now. You’ll find no rash judgements or opinions here – just sit back, put away your razor, and listen to 38 and a half minutes of Jim James and the weird places his voice will take you.

Listen! Jim James – A New Life

Singer Jim James from My Morning Jacket has another solo song to compliment his earlier release of Know Til Now. The track is A New Life and both are off of debut solo album, Regions Of Light And Sound Of God, which sounds kind of epic.

Jim James

The song is a slower track, which gains ‘a new life’ around the minute and a half mark and kicks it up a tiny notch. As the song continues, James’ singing gets more intense, and more layers get added, making the feel of the song radically different by the end of it. Check it out below. And if you’re in Philadelphia, or Brooklyn, or New York City, Jim is playing Feb 18/19/20, so go look for tickets – hyperlinks are for nice bloggers.

My Morning Jacket’s Jim James Announces Solo Album

The bearded wonder that is Jim James has a new track for us to check out. It’s from the My Morning Jacket singer’s upcoming solo album. Like all good things My Morning Jacket, this track is a sprawling, slow burning, 6+ minute track.

You can download Know Til Now via the fancy widget below the tracklisting, or you can wait for the album to come out and pirate all of the tracks at once. But don’t pirate it, okay.

His solo album is called Regions of Light and Sound of God, and is out February 5. This is truly a solo album for James, who plays every instrumental himself and engineered the album, too. He is also rumoured to hand press every CD and will cut town the trees and make paper for the liner artwork, too. Check out the tracklisting below.

Listen! Alt-J – Fitzpleasure (jim james apple C remix)

Alt-J have been setting the UK alight with their critically acclaimed first album, An Awesome Wave. We’ve featured their excellent song and video, Breezeblocks, as well as Tessellate. The album isn’t out in North America yet though – that happens on September 18. As part of the release, they have put up their tune Fitzpleasure for remix. The man up to task is the bearded wonder that is Jim James from My Morning Jacket. He has removed a lot of the a cappella parts, added some layers and a bit of a faster groove it seems. Check it out below.

Watch! My Morning Jacket – Outta My System

If it seems like just the other day that we gave you the Washed Out remix of Outta My System by My Morning Jacket, that’s because it was. Now the original song gets a video for itself. There are also a few recognizable people in the video, namely Zach Galifianakis and Jim James. There’s also some cartoon weirdness, and something about space and a bunch of cyclops – clearly I was too sober to enjoy the video. And if I’ve cultivated my readership properly, you won’t be sober as you read this, so enjoy the video!

Olympic Wrap Up: Muse, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and Pink Floyd (Do NOT Form a Super Group)

Muse have dropped a bit of a bombshell on us – they almost collaborated with Elton John on their Olympic song, Survival (via NME). Speaking to LA Radio stadio KROQ, Matt Bellamy said “Believe it or not, Elton John gave us a call and wanted to write a song for the Olympics. At one time Elton John was actually the director of the music for the Olympics. He contacted us and we thought ‘This is far out! We’re going to do a song for the Olympics with Elton John?!’So that’s how the ball started rolling way back over a year ago. But then he pulled out of the Olympics. He didn’t want to be involved anymore cause he fell out with the organisers so that left us with a half-baked idea. At that point we just let it go and carried on with making the album. And then the Olympics approached us again about the ending ceremony for us to play and that’s when we played them that song and they said they loved it and wanted to make it an official song of some kind.”

This quote is interesting because if you listen to the lyrics of Survival, you would think that it was written specifically written for the Olympics, not that it was chosen by the Olympics after the fact. Also interesting: I don’t know who Elton John is. Muse have also delayed the release of The 2nd Law until October 2, just because they can.

Yesterday, there were crazy rumours involving that Ron Weasley twin, Ed Sheeran, saying he was doing a performance of Wish You Were Here with Pink Floyd at the Olympic Closing Ceremonies. I didn’t run this story, because it just reeked of ridiculousness. Well, it turns out I am smarter than most media outlets – Pink Floyd have denied this is going to happen (via Gigwise). In a statement, they said exactly what I said in the previous sentence, “In response to press speculation, Pink Floyd state that the band is NOT performing at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.” Ed Sheeran, the little shit disturber, said that it is only drummer Nick Mason appearing with him.

Lily Allen is Now Lily Rose Cooper

British singer Lily Allen is changing her stage name to that of her married name. She married Sam Cooper and will now be Lily Rose Cooper (via Spinner). She is also working on a follow up album to 2009′s It’s Not Me, It’s You, which just happens to be the sentence I hear the most from girls. Well, excluding “Get out of that tree or I’m calling the police.”

New Music Announcements from The Killers, Big Boi, and Jim James from My Morning Jacket

The Killers will name their 4th studio album Battle Born, which is where the band recorded the album (via Consequence of Sound). It doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Abbey Road”. Brandon Flowers said to Rolling Stone, “In a sense, all Americans are battle born. Our ancestors came here for something better.” Makes sense, right? The album should be out in the fall.

One half of Outkast, Big Boi, will be releasing his second solo album this year. On Twitter last night, Big Boi told us that the album will be called Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (via Pitchfork). He also mentioned that he recorded a song with Big K.R.I.T. and UGK. Thanks for the info – I just had a taco for breakfast, but I didn’t tweet about it (*double checks Twitter).

Singer Jim James from My Morning Jacket is going to have a new solo album, but likely not until early 2013 (via Rolling Stone). The bearded wonder said of the solo album, “It’s done. I think it’s gonna come out in early February of next year. I think people who are fans of My Morning Jacket will obviously recognize some things on there, my voice and stuff like that. It’s got some mellow stuff on there, but it’s also got some really different stuff. I’m really proud of it. I think it’s got some different soundscapes that I’ve been into that maybe have been hidden on some Jacket records.”

Yes, fans of My Morning Jacket should recognize your voice, but thanks for the insight.

Lastly, the Kanye West / Jay-Z collaborative album, Watch the Throne, sounds like it’s getting a sequel. Kanye West told Quiet Lunch, “I’m working on the G.O.O.D. Music album of course…[I'm working on]Watch the Throne 2, which is not started yet, but that’s coming” (via Chart Attack). That could mean 2013, it could mean 2023, but it’s coming!

Are Lollapalooza Line Up Hints Popping Up Around Chicago?

Some of us like playing detective, trying to sift through hints and clues on the Internet, and then spread these rumours in a game of broken telephone, so that the end product is nothing like the fact. Guessing festival line ups is often a popular game, with people photoshopping fake posters and rumours of line ups, trying to convince people they have a scoop, or just being mean little trolls. As Pitchfork, via Wine & Pop, points out, there have been ads popping up at Chicago train stations, with lyrics from bands that might feature at Lollapalooza. The lyrics are also accompanied by the hashtag #Lolla. The hints point to Jack White, Justice, The Weeknd, and Die Antwoord, which would make for an interesting set of headliners – but they can’t be the headliners, can they? The official line up is announced on April 11 (despite the fact that tickets went on sale, with NO knowledge of the potentially shitty line up), so keep looking for those rumours/rumors.

Listen! The Flaming Lips / Bon Iver – Ashes in the Air. Plus Get the Blood of Flaming Lips Collaborators?!

You’ve gotta hand it to the Flaming Lips – they certainly like doing abnormal things. From gummi bear skulls and USB stick music releases, to rowdy concerts and the Zaireeka album (where you play 4 individual CDs in 4 stereos at the same time for ‘full effect’), the band are always pushing boundaries. The Wayne Coyne-led band are putting out a special record store release, and it will feature the blood of people like Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Bon Iver, Neon Indian, Nick Cave, and Erykah Badu (via Hollywood Reporter). Yup, sounds about par for the course.

The special release will be out on April 21, and is called The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. In an interview with MTV Hive, Wayne Coyne said “I don’t have everybody’s blood just yet, but I collected quite a few vials of blood and it’s actually sitting in my refrigerator as we speak.” I guess collaborations are giving more than they bargained for when they agreed to help out the Lips. Check out the track listing of the Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends below, and also listen to Ashes in the Air, featuring Bon Iver.
