Morning Music Notes – He’s On Fire!

Jay-Z Adds Big Names to Made in America Festival, Becomes Executive Producer of NBA 2K13

Jay-Z’s new Made in America festival already boasted a pretty good line up. Joining Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Passion Pit and others at the September 1/2 festival in Philadelphia are Drake, Chris Cornell, The Hives, DJ Shadow, and Run-DMC (via Consequence of Sound). There’s still tickets on sale, so go grab one – it’s a killer line up.

You would think that being a new father, owning an NBA team, and running a festival would keep most people more than busy enough. Jay-Z isn’t most men, and won’t stop until he gets zero hours of sleep. Adding to his list of tasks – a new reality show with Carrot Top executive producing the NBA video game NBA 2K13. Couldn’t he have worked on NBA Jam instead? I’d LOVE to hear Hova say “Boom shakalaka!” And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll see Beyonce as a cheerleader (damn!) or Jay-Z appearing as the new point guard for the New Jersey Brooklyn Nets.

Jay-Z will be picking the soundtrack for the video game (via Consequence of Sound). Oddly, the soundtrack consists of 95% Jay-Z songs, 4% Beyonce songs, and 1% Kanye West songs. Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad. In reality, it does feature a lot of Jay-Z and Kanye West songs, as well as Coldplay, U2, Nas, Daft Punk, Santigold, Puff “Where have you been” Daddy, and Dirty Projectors. The game is out October 2, and check out the full tracklist below.

RBC Royal Bank Ottawa Bluesfest – Day 11 by the numbers

Mainstage headliner: Skrillex! Headliner on the Full Flex Express tour

Party factor: 10. Every year, one night gets to 10 – and this year, it was Saturday the 14th

1st band: Gainsville FL’s Hundred Waters played to the first few hundred people through the gate; sounded like a fat groove Michel Legrand. Very accomplished harmonies on top of a really nice funky groove. Awesome!

Number of genre’s touched by TOKiMONSTA: At least 10. We have been following a few TOKiMONSTA tracks over the past few weeks, so we were excited to hear the San Francisco DJ’s futurebeats. Extremely cool dub beats.

2 DJ’s 1 name: Koan Sound – the first true dubstep act of 2012′s ‘electrofied’ Bluesfest – the Brighton duo started with bubbly dubstep, and finished with grimey dubstep (and hit most bases in between). Crowd starts to grow…

Number of times Diplo jumped into the crowd: 2. The crowd started to pour in (and drink) during Diplo’s masterful set. We’re huge fans of Diplo and the entire Mad Decent crew at PeteHatesMusic, so it was a huge treat to get to watch him whip the crowd up over a 100-or-so minute set featuring stuff from all over the globe. One of Diplo’s specialties (and something I really enjoyed watching) was how easily he changes speeds in his set… from house to Moomba to dubstep to hip-hop… this guy makes it look really easy. The most fun set of the day – thanks Diplo!

6 degrees of Beirut: Beirut has a french horn. The French colonized Lebanon. Many Lebanese people left Beirut in the 80′s to escape civil war, and came to Ottawa. So, it goes without saying, that Beirut did very well at Bluesfest. These guys are somewhere between Mumford & Sons and Ennio Morricone, and the Santa Fe NM band was an awesome dinner breather between beats. Featured a french horn, a tuba, 2 trumpets, a trombone, and a ukelele – very cool.

Number of light towers on stage for Pretty Lights: 17 – and they did a great job of providing ambiance to the Colorado producer’s soulfull originals. Somewhere between dub, jazz, hip-hop, and the wizard of oz…

10cc: The band I felt the most sorry for, as they had to play in the middle of a triangle between 2 of the loudest acts in music…

Loudness Factor Band 1: Mastodon. This band should make the soundtrack to Moby Dick… or some sort of ancient mariner epic. Pounding, shredding metal – flawlessly played. Drummer Brann Dailor gave a drumming clinic – amazing!

Loudness Factor 2: Skrillex. What act could have possibly finished off a full day of progressively wilder beats, and a progressively out-of-control crowd? I will answer that question with another question: Is there a better aggressive music act on the planet than Skrillex? Seriously… where does aggressive music go from here? Screaming, thumping beats from the most distinctive producer on the planet, with enough A/V tricks to put a drugged-out teenager in the hospital (which I’m sure happened today).

Is Skrillex the best DJ on the planet? No. But that isn’t important here. His compositions are absolutely the most agressive sound on the planet, and was the perfect act to close a hot, sunny party-factor-10 day.

Check Out The Ottawa Bluesfest Lineup

July 4-15 will see blues fans (and mainly NON-blues fans) descend on Canada’s capital for the Ottawa Bluesfest (I don’t get paid to report it as the RBC Royal Bank Bluefest, and no one in their right mind actually calls it that in the real world). The lineup was just announced and features acts such as Snoop Dogg (with hologram Tupac? probably not), Iron Maiden, Tiësto, Skrillex, Alice Cooper, Seal (!?!), Lauryn Hill, Metric, Norah Jones, Beirut, The Weeknd, Deltron 3030, Mastodon, Dirty Projectors, Thievery Corporation, Paul Oakenfold, MSTKRFT, Chromeo, !!!, Blitzen Trapper, and all your favourite other blues artists. The party kicks off at LeBreton Flats Park shortly after Canada Day. Make sure you see Seal for me! Also, let’s hope things go better than last year’s stage collapse….

Jack White + Disney = Lone Ranger Soundtrack

Since Jack White has stopped collaborating with his 3 bands and is now a solo artist, I guess he’s now considered a lone ranger? Answer: no, stop trying to do lame segues. Hoping to capitalize on their observation, Disney has landed Jack White to write the soundtrack for the new Lone Ranger movie starring Johnny Depp (via NME). Since Johnny Depp can play the guitar, perhaps there is a collaboration in the works?

Jack White has previously worked on the Cold Mountain soundtrack (which led to him dating Renée Zellweger) and he also did a James Bond song, Another Way to Die, with Alicia Keys.

“Jack’s an amazing songwriter with a unique style,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Variety. “We’re all very excited to have him on board.” Thanks for the most generic statement possible, Jerry. Jack White just played his first solo show in the UK on Monday night and it was a good one.

Morning Music Notes – Unoriginal: The Band. Original: Feistodon (Feist + Mastodon)

Drummer from The Band, Levon Helm, Dies at Age of 71

First Dick Clark, now Levon Helm – the 71 year old drummer from The Band passed away yesterday. To youngsters who don’t know them – yes, they were actually called The Band. A few days ago, his family had posted that Helm was in the final stages of cancer. One of the most influential drummers of his time, Helm touched and inspired many. Some quotes making the rounds yesterday:

Bob Dylan: “In response to Levon’s passing: He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I’m going to miss him, as I’m sure a whole lot of others will too.”

Patrick Carney (@PatrickCarney from the Black Keys): “one of the best singers and drummers and it all is sad.”

Tom Morello (@tmorello from Rage Against the Machine): “Hey Levon Helm, thanks man for carrying The Weight of that backbeat (and great vocals) for decades. Inspired so many”

Elton John: “When I heard The Band’s Music from Big Pink, their music changed my life. And Levon was a big part of that band. Nigel Olson, my drummer, will tell you that every drummer that heard him was influenced by him. He was the greatest drummer and a wonderful singer and just a part of my life that was magical. They once flew down to see me in Philadelphia and I couldn’t believe it. They were one of the greatest bands of all time. They really changed the face of music when their records came out. I had no idea he was sick so I’m very dismayed and shocked that he died so quickly. But now my son [Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John] has his name.”

Morning Music Notes – Drew Barrymore Accidentally Pays Homage to Michael Jackson’s Bad

Mastodon have announced a new album and the accompanying tracklisting, so that you can make up the sounds that you think will match the song titles. The album will be released September 27, and one format of the Mastodon release will include a special 3D experience known as Augmented Reality, reports Gigwise.

“Created by Los Angeles-based Company Total Immersion, Augmented Reaility combines virtual and real worlds to create a 3D one-of-a-kind interactive experience that users can control. Just by using a camera on a computer, their own face and the cover art on ‘The Hunter’, the user can turn themselves into ‘The Hunter’ sculpture that is pictured on the cover.”

Drew Barrymore Teams Up With Best Coast

The child actor from E.T., aka Drew Barrymore, has continued her recent hobby of directing. After making the movie Whip It, Drew has now directed the latest video by Los Angeles indie rockers, Best Coast. Any video that stars Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass) and Donald Glover (Troy from “Community”), and has a Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ vibe must be great, right?

Coldplay Hit Jimmy Kimmel, in Non-Violent Sense of the Word

Coldplay haven’t announced a new album. They haven’t mentioned much about a new album, but they have been hitting up festivals, and most recent, Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show. Below, you can check out live versions of recent still terribly named single Every Teardrop is a Waterfall, plus Charlie Brown.
