Morning Music Notes – This Is Our Fourth Album, What Should We Call It?

Amy Winehouse’s Camden Home Up for Sale

The house that Amy Winehouse died in in North London has been listed for sale by her family (via Yahoo). I know people die in homes all the time, but living in a house where you KNOW someone died – and a famous musician, too – would be a touch odd. I wonder if it’ll be bought by a super fan or other artists seeking inspiration or heavenly intervention.

“Amy loved that house but none of the family felt it appropriate that they should live in it and it was not practical to keep it empty while paying the costs of its upkeep” a spokesman said in an email to Reuters. The property is reported listed for 2.7 million pounds, which is about 2.699999 million more pounds than I currently have to my name.

Bloc Party Announce Their Fourth Album, Aptly Named Four

An English band has reunited and named their fourth album after the numerical release number. No, we’re not talking about the Verve and Forth (which I assumed was a play on words) – we’re talking about Bloc Party. As I retweeted yesterday (since I was might’ve been drinking some beers and didn’t want to type 140 characters), Bloc Party have announced their new album will be called Four. From singer Kele Okereke’s blog:

“we have just finished mixing our new record. i am very proud of it. it is the best thing that we have ever done and finishing this record has taken us on quite a journey.”

“there have been babies, breakdowns, tantrums and hospitalisations but its finally here. we started making this record in NY in the winter of 2011. we didn’t want to let the world know so we told a lie that got out of hand but it made us laugh in the process, which brought us closer together.”

Of COURSE it’s the best thing you’ve done – EVERY band says that. There’s lots more rambling interesting information at the blog post, so check it out if you’re so inclined. There’s also a 3.5 minute trailer you can check out below to get an idea of what their “best thing” that they have ever done sounds like. I’m actually kind of excited now.

Morning Music Notes – Start of Year Slump Edition

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you woke up in a ditch somewhere warm – I’m talking about today, not on New Years Day. Did anything exciting happen in the music world over the holidays? No! Read below to find out.

Bloc Party to Release New Album – With Kele Okereke

2011 did not end well for both Bloc Party and Kele Okereke. Kele thought he was kicked out of Bloc Party. This was denied, and then confirmed to be true. But like that crazy girl who stares at your bedroom window from the sidewalk below, sometimes you just can’t get rid of someone that easily. It has been confirmed that Bloc Party will be releasing new material with former and now current lead singer, Kele Okereke (via Gigwise). The album will be released later this year, and will hopefully not suck.

UK Album Sales are Doooooooown

It appears Britain’s album sales have followed the trend of my bank account and have seen a steady decline. 2011 marked the seventh straight year of declining album sales in the UK (via NME). However, digital sales went up, which surprises me as much as Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s divorce (hint: not much).

“According to the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) – via The Guardian – last year album sales fell by 5.6% to 113.2 million. This is down from a peak of 163.4 million back in 2004.”

“Digital album sales actually rose by 26.6% to 26.6 million, but CD album sales dropped by 12.6% to 86.2 million. Even so, CD is still the UK’s most popular format to purchase music, with a 76.1% share of the market, with 23.5% on digital and 0.3% on vinyl.”

The biggest seller – have you been paying attention? – is Adele, with 3.8 million copies. Adele also had the number 1 played song on Spotify in 2011, with Rolling in the Deep (via Gigwise). Adele has it all (or is it “could have had it all”) – except an ultra cool blog. Take your millions and cry at THAT little fact, missy.

The Top 10 most played tracks of 2011 on Spotify, which makes me fear for the future of rock music, are:

1. Adele – ‘Rolling In The Deep’
2. Bruno Mars – ‘Grenade’
3. Rihanna – ‘S&M’
4. Jessie J feat. B.o.B – ‘Price Tag’
5. Jessie J – ‘Do It Like A Dude’
6. LMFAO – ‘Party Rock Anthem’
7. Adele – ‘Make You Feel My Love’
8. Rihanna feat. Drake – ‘What’s My Name?’
9. Rihanna – ‘Only Girl In The World’
10. Katy Perry – ‘Firework’

Nice Pay Day for Jay-Z and Kanye West

The “already richer than me and 5 generations of my family will ever be” Jay-Z and Kanye West made a sweet little pay day over the holidays, playing a gig in Dubai (via Hip Hop DX). The owner of the shitty football club, Manchester City, Sheikh Mansour paid $6 to have them perform at his sister’s 16th birthday party. Sweet 16 indeed! All I got was some drunken clown who kept hitting on my mom. The clown did look a little like my dad though.

The gig was performed in front of a packed crowd in Dubai, who could relate to all of the Mercedes and bling lyrics. I’m basing this on my image of everyone in Dubai being an oil billionaire.

Pink Floyd to Reunite at 2012 Olympics? Likely a Typical British Media Rumour

Pink Floyd split under vicious conditions decades ago. However, they reunited in 2005 for the charity Live 8 event. “Sources” (read: people who want to sell newspapers / drive up web traffic) are saying that the Olympics are about as big an event as it gets, and why would Pink Floyd NOT play them (via Express). Sound logic (sarcasm alert!), but it would be pretty wild if they DID play.

Bono Told To Move On By Police for Busking in Dublin

In a headline that seems more fitting for the start of the 1980s and not the 2010s, U2 lead singer Bono was urged by police to move along from where he was busking, as they didn’t recognize him (via NME). Bono was out on Grafton Street in Dublin for a fundraising performance on Christmas Eve, joined by Damien Rice and Glen Hansard from the Frames. Things got sorted out (read: Bono bribed the police), and everyone had a merry night I’m sure. Check out some footage of the event down below.

Morning Music Notes – Racist Edition

Is Florence + The Machine’s Video for No Light, No Light Racist? Kele Okereke from Bloc Party Thinks So

Florence + The Machine recently debuted their new video fro No Light, No Light. YES – it features a white singer and a white backing choir! But beyond the sarcasm, claims are being made that the video is in fact racist. Bloc Party front man, Kele Okereke, thinks the video goes over the top (via Gigwise).

Kele posted on his blog, ‘people i dont like… florence welch’. He also said, “Now i dont know if this girl is a “white supremacist” as this article claims but in this day and age a video like this seems pretty stupid. thoughts?”

The video features a man with a bag over his head, who is revealed to be a black voodoo artist. He chases Florence, who falls into the arms of white children, while the voodoo artist is shrouded in shadows. Is this a case of looking for racism in the wrong places, or do people have a point? Re-watch the video below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Scott Weiland Discusses His Bizarro Christmas Album

We have been giving Scott Weiland a bit of a hard time for his seemingly illogical career move, from grunge rock front man to holiday tune crooner. Well, the Sudbury Star caught up with him and asked him a few questions and got us the answers we demanded (via Sudbury Star).

Highlights of the interview are below:

The Star: Why?
“Um, well, why not?” answers Weiland from his California home. “They’re songs and renditions that I’ve listened to from a child all the way to my adult years. And they’re very special to my heart, you know. If you last long enough in this business, you have the ability to make the kind of music you want to make. And this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while.”

The Star: How did you end up making a Christmas album?
Weiland: We actually recorded one song over a year ago, and we decided, ‘Let’s make this an album.’ So we recorded with a full jazz orchestra — some of the best players around. And we took a lot of time figuring out the arrangements and finding the right keys and giving some of the songs a different flavour. You’ve got some bossa nova, a little reggae. It was amazing to be able to sing those kinds of songs and experiment with different phrasing. Singing rock ‘n’ roll is a lot different than singing jazz.

The Star: Why go traditional instead of making a rock album?
Weiland: Rock ‘n’ roll pays the bills, but I have a lot of different musical tastes. And if I were just stuck in one genre, I wouldn’t be doing this gig anymore.

The Star: But you have to admit, this doesn’t fit at all with your image.
Weiland: Well, you know what, man? People don’t know me. They know what someone’s opinion is. And they know my songs. But they really don’t know me. Christmas, ever since I was a kid, was a big thing. It still is a big thing.

Samsung Mocks Apple and their Geeky Followers

Apple have massive and loyal followers. People who line up for hours, even days, to get their hands on the latest product means the fan base clearly has something wrong with them. Ignore the iPhone that I am writing this post with. Samsung (never heard of them) decides to poke fun at this Apple culture, as well as show off a few good features about their own phone, the Galaxy S II. Check it out below.

Morning Music Notes – Facebook Continues World Domination

Apologies for the lack of updates yesterday. The music world kept dropping interesting nuggets on the world that you had to go elsewhere to find out – we don’t want that happening. Unfortunately, I was held hostage by a gang of space robots who can’t stand PeteHatesMusic, thereby limiting me to my one post. These robots hinted that over the next week, they will limit PHM to one post per day, and oddly, it will be done by guest editor “rich”. He must’ve done something to make them happy (it must’ve been all the space robot posters in his room). Without further adieu:

Facebook Launches Major Changes, Including Teaming with Spotify

Big news out of Facebook’s f8 Conference yesterday. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a Facebook partnership with (legal!) music streaming service, Spotify. Spotify took Europe by storm and came to America earlier this year. It is not available (legally) in Canada right now. As you listen to music on Spotify/Facebook, your friends will know what you are listening to (warning Nickelback fans!). Your friends can share and join your stream if they like the song as much as you do. This is the new Listen with a Friend feature, which might sound hokey, but think of the popularity of similar models, like turntable.fm. Reports will also be created to show who you listen to the most, top albums, songs, etc. So not only will you know what your friends (and their babies and pets) are up to, you will now know what they are listening to. Cool, not creepy, or so I tell myself.

Mark Zuckerberg has hit the nail on the head – it’s amazing how much you can learn about music through your friends. I typically do that through face to face word of mouth, and the occasional YouTube video link shared via Facebook, but the potential is high, especially given the reports that will be created. When people who don’t know Radiohead (?!) see I have listened to them 1000 times on Facebook, they might get interested.

That’s also what this site is for, although to a much lesser degree and audience. Sharing new music, sharing news, learning about bands, and space robots. In December, when PeteHatesMusic has London representation, we will be making full use of the Spotify on Facebook features, so you know what we are listening to and can make recommendations that way.

And fear not, Canadian music fans, a bevy of music sponsors besides Spotify were listed, and some of these can be streamed right here in the Great White North. Music partners at launch include:

TuneIn
iHeartRadio
AudioVroom
Earbits
Deezer
Spotify
Rdio
Slacker
MixCloud
Turntable.fm
MOG
Rhapsody
Songza
SoundCloud
Jelli

For those that don’t know Spotify, or would like an illustrative look at the new partnership, check out the video below.

And if all of this is too serious for you, check out 7 minutes of Andy Samberg from Saturday Night Live (and Lonely Island) fame doing an impression of Mark Zuckerberg. This is what actually kicked off the keynote speech, so Facebook does have a sense of humour. Note the awesomeness that is when Mark Zuckerberg actually walks out and they accidentally put the WRONG NAME AND TITLE of the guy who CREATED Facebook. Captions guy, you’re fired!

New Video from Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke

Kele Okereke might fear that Bloc Party have kicked him out of the band – holding a practice without the singer is your first hint – but he cares not right now. Kele has unveiled the new video for his collaboration with Lucy Taylor, called What Did I Do. The track is the first single from his forthcoming EP, ‘The Hunter’. Get ready dance floor, here I come!

U2′s From the Sky Down Documentary Trailer

After opening at TIFF earlier this month, the U2 documentary From the Sky Down will hit theatres shortly. Unsure if you want to see it? Let this trailer entice you (or put you off forever). Unsure who U2 are? Well, you’re on the wrong website, and you might have an even better reason to see the documentary.

Listen: The Twilight Sad – Kill It in the Morning

Scottish rocks, the Twilight Sad are about to release their third album, No One Can Ever Know. For those who don’t know the Twilight Sad, after hearing their vocals for 3 seconds, they are clearly Scottish. Check out (or download) their latest track, Kill It in the Morning, below.

New Album from Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke

Bloc Party started with such a promising career. Their debut album, Silent Alarm, rates as one of my favourite debut albums ever. Next came A Weekend in the City, which was so-so. Intimacy was more of the same – the second album slump carried onto the third album. At this point, lead singer Kele Okereke went solo, and came out with last year’s album The Boxer. The electronia side project will continue, with the release of a 7-track album, The Hunter (via NME). The album is out on October 31 – Halloween (scary!) in the UK, and presumably the next day in North America.

“The lead track ‘What Did I Do?’, which debuted yesterday (September 12) sees Kele step away from the mic, giving lead vocal to singer Lucy Taylor. Other collaborators on the EP include Sub Focus, Fred Falke, RAC and QNESS.”

Tracklisting for The Hunter:

What Did I Do? feat Lucy Taylor
Release Me
Devotion
Goodbye Horses
Cable’s Goodbye
Love As A Weapon
You Belong To Someone Else

Check out a single, On the Lam, from his first album.
