Online Music Sales Up in 2011 (I Think PHM Said This Yesterday)
Good news, people who like shopping in their pajamas. Digital music sales are here to stay (assuming record companies like cash money). “Global online music revenues are expected to rise by about 7 percent this year to $6.3 billion as digital services such as Spotify and Apple Inc’s iTunes gain momentum, technology research firm Gartner said on Tuesday (via Yahoo).
“By 2015, Gartner forecasts online music spending will rise to $7.7 billion from $5.9 billion in 2010. In the same period, consumer spending on CDs and other physical music forms is seen falling to about $10 billion from $15 billion.”
“Many consumers took early advantage of the Internet to illegally share music through services like Napster, hurting music labels like Universal, Warner and EMI that still dominate the industry.
“But the convenience of legal purchasing from stores like iTunes is increasingly encouraging consumers to pay for music and the big labels are also raising more money from live music, sending many stars who had given up touring back on the road. In addition, a host of subscription services to streamed music like Spotify, Lastfm.com and Pandora are gaining popularity. These are often offered by third parties keen to exploit a new market, including Facebook and mobile operators.”
What is not noted is that piracy will continue to comprise 99% of the music downloads. Unless the death sentence is the punishment, at which point revenues will increase tenfold.
Adele Has Vocal Chord Surgery and Now Sounds Like Stephen Hawking
Adele, who has ruled the album charts since the dinosaurs roamed the planet, had surgery on her vocal chords in the US (via Guardian). Maybe now she’ll be able to sing in key! Adele had to cancel her tour after postponing several gigs, due to her ailing throat.
“The 23-year-old underwent “vocal cord microsurgery”, according to a statement from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. “Based on the advice of her doctor and voice therapist in the United Kingdom, Adele came to Boston to consult and undergo corrective voice surgery,” it said. She worked with Dr Steven Zeitels, head of the hospital’s Voice Center, who previously operated on Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.
“Zeitels’s procedure uses specialised lasers, with Adele probably spending a couple of hours under anaesthetic. The surgery is designed to remove a benign polyp, preventing recurrent vocal cord bleeding. It comes less than a month after the singer called off her remaining 2011 appearances, and it’s hoped that the surgery will allow her to resume her busy concert schedule, including her first UK arena tour.”
What Zeitels doesn’t say is that the specialised lasers are actually sharks with laser beams attached to their foreheads, fulfilling several wish lists of Dr. Evil’s.
Andy Samberg, Like a Copycat?
Andy Samberg has enjoyed continued success through his video spoofs and comedic songs, through his Lonely Island outfit, and his regular gig on Saturday Night Live. He has made viral videos like you and I make pots of coffee – with great difficulty, I burned my bloody hand! ease. It turns out it might seem so easy because he is copying the work of others – or so the lawsuit claims (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“In a lawsuit filed in New York federal court on Thursday, Aleric Banks (aka “Rick tha Ruler”) and Monique Hines say they created the music that would form the basis of two skits on SNL, including “Shy Ronnie” and “Like A Boss.” The two plaintiffs are a St. Louis-based production team. According to an interview given to a local press outlet earlier this year, Banks and Hines had a mutual connection with Samberg and submitted some tracks as the comedian prepared to release his first album as a member of the band The Lonely Island.”
“Samberg’s band recorded the tracks, allegedly taking the plaintiffs’ copyrighted master recordings “verbatim,” and added lyrics. About a year later, after Lonely Island’s album came out, Samberg reprised a couple of the songs on SNL. On April 4, 2009, Samberg and actor Seth Rogen performed “Like A Boss.” On December 5, 2009, Samberg and Rihanna performed “Shy Ronnie,” a sketch about a bashful musician who has trouble speaking up when it’s his time to throw out a verse.”
“Initially, Banks and Hines were thrilled at the breakthrough, especially after “Shy Ronnie” was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Now, after failing to receive claimed credit and compensation, the two have filed a lawsuit saying that the music wasn’t really original.”
“The plaintiffs say that before the release of Samberg’s album and skits, a Universal Music Group subsidiary label sent them a “producer declaration” form. Banks filled it out by stating that as the writer and producer of “Like A Boss,” he was a 50 percent owner of the copyright. Banks says he got a response letter claiming that he had entered into an agreement with Lonely Island that only entitled him to a 25 percent copyright interest.”

Morning Music Notes – Denying Rumours Until The Truth Comes Out
Yet Again, Tom Morello Denies Rage Against the Machine Album Rumours
Clearly Tom Morello doesn’t watch the news. Lance Armstrong was accused of using performance enhancing drugs for all of his Tour de France victories, yet he denied it and sued people. He finally admitted it was all a lie and he was in denial. A totally incomparable situation is Tom Morello’s Rage Against the Machine album rumours. The band have denied them repeatedly, but we all know you’re testing something out in the studio. Sure, you’re afraid the magic isn’t there, so you don’t want people to know you’re in the studio. But let us know already. (Note: I’m probably way off in my theory)
After Tuesday’s new album rumours due to a throwaway comment, guitarist Tom Morello has yet again denied that a new album is in the works. In a Q & A on Twitter, a fan asked “ok spill the beans, new rage album or not? Pleeeeeeeease #resortedtobeggingnow.” Morello responded “‘fraid not. Appreciate the enthusiasm but ‘no new rage album’ is kinda like ‘not seeing a unicorn’. It’s not exactly NEWS.”
This segues nicely into our newest segment at PeteHatesMusic – Unicorn Spotting.
Grammy Rules – Nipples: Yes for Men, No for Women
A leaked document has revealed some interesting stipulations at this Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The memo is from CBS, who produced the infamous 2004 Super Bowl, where ‘wardrobe malfunction’ became part of our lexicon. The document says that men can show their nipples, while women cannot (via Gigwise). I have the opposite rules at my parties.
Some quotes from the memo: “CBS Program Practices advises that all talent appearing on camera please adhere to Network policy concerning wardrobe. Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic.
Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples.”
It also notes that shirts with foreign languages on them need to be reviewed. What’s this about no side or bottom boob curves?! Worst.Event.Ever!

Morning Music Notes – David Bowie Makes Internet Explode
David Bowie is Back with New Song, Album, and 66th Birthday
David Bowie, best known for an appearance in Extras, is releasing his first album in 10 years (via NME). The album is called The Next Day, and is out on March 8 (Australia), March 11 (UK/most other countries), March 12 (North America). It will have 14 tracks, and 3 Deluxe Version bonus tracks.
Who saw this coming? After years of hiding away like Bruce Wayne in the beginning of the Dark Knight Rises, Bowie has finally re-emerged, putting those health rumours to rest. To celebrate his announcement, which comes on his 66th birthday, Bowie has
gotten absolutely smashedreleased a new video for a track called Where Are We Now?, which is what many senile, old men ask after about 10 minutes of going for a walk. The track is a slower ballad, which you can check out below, with the tracklisting below that.David Bowie – Where Are We Now?

Songs Pulled From Radio in Light of Sandy Hook School Shooting
Just like what happened after 9/11, a selection of ‘offensive songs’ with potentially harmful lyrics have been pulled off of the radio due to the recent school shooting at Newtown, Conn., USA. The song that’s being pulled that’s getting the most buzz is Ke$ha’s Die Young, which features an offensive title (via Hollywood Reporter).
Ke$ha took to Twitter and said “I understand. I had my very own issue with ‘die young’ for this reason. I did NOT want to sing those lyrics and I was FORCED TO.” That’s the problem when you don’t write your own lyrics and sing what’s put in front of you! Ke$ha also said, “I’m so so so sorry for anyone who has been effected by this tragedy and I understand why my song is now inappropriate. words cannot express.”
Also getting the boot from the radio is Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks, which has a line “All the other kids with the pumped-up kicks/You better run, better run, outrun my gun … better run faster than my bullet.” So is this over the top or totally necessary? And does this mean most rap won’t get played on the radio any time soon?
Stereophonics Announce March 4 as Release Date for Graffiti On the Train

MySpace Has Lost Over $40 Million This Year; Plow Ahead with Streaming Service
It seems pretty amazing to think that MySpace was sold for $580 million in 2005. The buyer, News Corp, ended up flipping it for a mere $35 million last summer. Justin Timberlake was one of the guys who hopped on board the rebranding, in the hope of bringing it back to it’s lofty heights. The web traffic increased 36% since the new takeover (via Hypebot). Despite that, reports show that MySpace has lost $40 million so far in 2012. Ouch.
Investors are being asked to shell out $50 million so that MySpace can be re-re-launched as a music streaming service, ala Spotify or Pandora. The plan by new buyers, Interactive Media, is to use $10 million to market MySpace, $15–$25 million to license music and hold $15 – $25 million for “general working capital.” That last part means hookers if I know anything about business.
How will MySpace win in the online streaming world, when their name is no longer cooler? They think it’ll be because of the unsigned artists that feature on MySpace. 5 million unsigned artists contributed to the 27 million total songs on the old MySpace. This was enough for 50% of all listens on MySpace – royalty free for MySpace, too.
How many times can you re-brand yourselves before you pull the plug?! When will JT start bringing his star power to the site? If there were some exclusives to MySpace, maybe it would be worth checking out. Otherwise, it’ll lose money, like Spotify and Pandora still do.
Puscifer Announce New EP
The band is called Puscifer. They have an album called V is for Vagina. They have an EP called C Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here). Jay-Z Adds Big Names to Made in America Festival, Becomes Executive Producer of NBA 2K13
Jay-Z’s new Made in America festival already boasted a pretty good line up. Joining Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Passion Pit and others at the September 1/2 festival in Philadelphia are Drake, Chris Cornell, The Hives, DJ Shadow, and Run-DMC (via Consequence of Sound). There’s still tickets on sale, so go grab one – it’s a killer line up.
You would think that being a new father, owning an NBA team, and running a festival would keep most people more than busy enough. Jay-Z isn’t most men, and won’t stop until he gets zero hours of sleep. Adding to his list of tasks –
a new reality show with Carrot Topexecutive producing the NBA video game NBA 2K13. Couldn’t he have worked on NBA Jam instead? I’d LOVE to hear Hova say “Boom shakalaka!” And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll see Beyonce as a cheerleader (damn!) or Jay-Z appearing as the new point guard for theNew JerseyBrooklyn Nets.Jay-Z will be picking the soundtrack for the video game (via Consequence of Sound). Oddly, the soundtrack consists of 95% Jay-Z songs, 4% Beyonce songs, and 1% Kanye West songs. Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad. In reality, it does feature a lot of Jay-Z and Kanye West songs, as well as Coldplay, U2, Nas, Daft Punk, Santigold, Puff “Where have you been” Daddy, and Dirty Projectors. The game is out October 2, and check out the full tracklist below.

Amy Winehouse bio talks shop

He goes on to discuss Amy’s initial trouble recording with Mark Ronson’s 60′s pop grooves – given her jazz background. Looks like this will be an interesting read. The book comes out tomorrow (June 28th).

Justin Bieber’s new album Believe has sold 374,000 albums in its first week. Sure – it’s complete crap. But, it deserves notice because: a) it is his 4th #1 album on the Billboard 200 before his 19th birthday; and b) There’s lots of room for everybody to make and enjoy music.

Somewhat Brilliant iTunes and Amazon Royalty Scam Gets Busted
So you have stolen a bunch of credit card numbers. Buying that 52 inch TV might raise some flags. How about you get a musician to upload some tracks to iTunes and Amazon, buy the tracks with your stolen information (all the while disguising your various locations of purchase), and collect the royalties? Actually, that sounds like a HUGE pain in the ass – just give me the damn TV already. Anyway, this is the scam that Denver White (if that is your real name) and 11 others were just busted running (via Telegraph).
DJ Denver, as he was known, and 11 others ran the scam and cost iTunes and Amazon as estimated £1 million in royalties. White produced tracks that were uploaded, and then bought with the stolen credit cards. In a detrimental advertisement for the software Hide My IP, the scammers were busted when their various IP addresses were not as well hidden as they had believed.
‘Somebody at iTunes noticed that a complete unknown from Wolverhampton called DJ Denver, also known as Denver White, operating entirely on his own, rather than through a record company and without any marketing that anybody could see, was selling so much on iTunes that his name featured in the volume sales charts,’ said Prosecutor Helen Malcolm. ‘He was selling so much and earning so much in the way of royalties he was selling at a rate you would expect from the likes of Madonna.’
How did they all get busted? One of the music services, Tunecore, was withholding money. A man calling himself Daniel Thompson kept calling and emailing to get the money. Tunecore were aware of the fraud investigation and played the part to perfection, saying that they couldn’t pay the money for tax reasons, and that he would have to go to New York in person to collect the money. They would pay for his tickets, and needed his real name and address. Game, set, match. The trial is still under way, and I am removing all of the PeteHatesMusic Hip Hop Cat Remixes that have been climbing up the charts for some mysterious reason.
Whitney Houston: News About Her Death, Tributes, Apple iTunes Controversy, and Oprah Winfrey Confusion
Whitney Houston Found Dead in Hotel Bathtub
Coroners confirmed that Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, but the cause of death is not yet known (via Yahoo). There were no signs of trauma or foul play, so the rubber ducky is off the hook.
Strangely, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter, 18 year old Bobbi Kristina Brown was also taken to the hospital the next day. Apparently she was suffering from anxiety, which can be understood, given the sudden death of her mom. I wonder if Whitney feels like she got the raw deal, with the name of her daughter favouring that of the dad, and not the mom.
Whitney’s Dominance of the Billboard Charts
We all know Whitney Houston had quite an accomplished career, albeit one that ended too young at 48. Billboard highlights some of her stunning achievements.
The Whitney Houston-based soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” is the longest-reigning album by a woman in the 56-year history of the survey. Houston is the only woman to have have albums on the charts more than 10 weeks with multiple albums, as outlined below.
Weeks at No. 1, Title, Artist, Year Reached No. 1
20 weeks, “The Bodyguard” soundtrack/Whitney Houston, 1992
19 weeks, “21,” Adele, 2011 (*currently at No. 1)
15 weeks, “Tapestry,” Carole King, 1971
14 weeks, “Whitney Houston,” Whitney Houston, 1986
13 weeks, “Judy at Carnegie Hall,” Judy Garland, 1961
12 weeks, “Jagged Little Pill,” Alanis Morissette, 1995
12 weeks, “Fearless, ” Taylor Swift, 2008
11 weeks, “Mariah Carey,” Mariah Carey, 1991
11 weeks, “Whitney,” Whitney Houston, 1986
10 weeks, “Forever Your Girl,” Paula Abdul, 1989
10 weeks, “The Singing Nun,” the Singing Nun, 1963
Whitney also holds the Billboard Hot 100 record for most consecutive No. 1 singles, with a massive seven in-a-row, which occurred from 1985 through 1988.

Radiohead to Release 2 New Songs on Dec. 19
Christmas has come early for Radiohead fans. Who said blackmailing Thom Yorke wouldn’t get me what I wanted? 2 songs that have been played live before and both featured on the Live From The Basement: The King of Limbs recording (out in time for Christmas) are reportedly going to be out as full studio versions as well (via At Ease).
The songs, The Daily Mail and Staircase, were both recorded during The King of Limbs sessions, but they did not make it to the studio album. Amazon has the tracks up for purchase as well as some cover art. Anyone else think The King of Limbs would’ve been great with the original 8 songs, plus the Supercollider/Butcher single and the new single all on one disc?
Karen O is Off the Market
Much to the chagrin of the gentlemen who are saying no no no, Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, has gotten married over the weekend (via Spinner). Given how bizarre her concerts can be, who bets the wedding was a bit of a freak show? Duct tape wedding dress? Eyeball wedding cake? Seems natural to me! Karen O wed her longtime boyfriend, Barnaby Clay, who sounds like a Texas Oil tycoon or ruler or the Wild West.
Beatles and Apple: New iTunes Commercial and free Yellow Submarine Book
Now that the Beatles and Apple have ended their long time feud, they are complimenting each other well (much like this prom dress I am wearing compliments me, despite what my Shrink says). There is a cool new commercial for iTunes that uses the Beatles iconic album covers. There is also a free book for iOS devices called The Beatles Yellow Submarine book for kids, but I won’t judge you if you read it (via Slash Gear).
