Morning Music Notes – Backtracking On Your Past

Psy Apologies for Prior Anti-American Comments, Then Plays at White House

If you were to ask Psy in 2004, when he was saying lyrics such as “Kill those f—ing Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives”, if he thought he’d have a billion YouTube views and be playing in Washington for the President of the United States in 2012, he’d probably respond “What the fuck is YouTube?” But immediately after that, he would definitely not see Washington in his future. The big story that emerged over the weekend is Psy sang a few anti-American songs at rallies in South Korea back in 2002 and 2004 (via Digital Music News).

The lyrics are:
“Kill those f—ing Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives
Kill those f—ing Yankees who ordered them to torture
Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law, and fathers
Kill them all slowly and painfully.”

Psy would’ve liked that little incident to stay buried. His handlers are saying the lyrics were lost in translation. Were they about loving puppies and messed up entirely?! The singer naturally issued an apology to Americans and American soldiers, which still hasn’t won him back all of his fans. Psy performed as scheduled last night at the Christmas concert, alongside President Obama, host Conan O’Brien, Diana Ross, and others.

Notorious B.I.G.’s Autopsy Revealed to Public Despite No Warning to His Family

Biggie was tragically gunned down in 1997. The Los Angeles police released the autopsy this weekend of Chris “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, who was shot 4 times in March 1997. Apparently it was released early due to an “administrative error” (via Guardian). I won’t link to you to the autopsy sketch, but it shows where the bullets entered and travelled through Biggie’s body.

“Our detectives personally spoke with the Wallace family (Friday) night, and apologized for not notifying them prior to the release” said LAPD’s homicide officer, Billy Hayes. “Obviously this has been a challenging case for us to solve. We hope that witnesses or other people with information will come forward and give us the clues we need to solve this case.”

Hologram Tupac is a suspect, right?

Listen! No Doubt – Push and Shove

Can super producer Diplo help bring No Doubt back to the top of the mainstream heap? You can find out below, by listening to the Diplo-produced title track by No Doubt, for Push and Shove. This is our second sampling of Push and Shove, with the first being Settle Down.

The song has a reggae-esque feel, with Gwen Stefani spitting out lyrics, rather than singing her typical rock meets pop style. Until we get to the big chorus, that is. Bring back 1990s No Doubt! Check it out below, and 2 guesses to where the song premiered….

Damon Albarn is Making Another Solo Album

Damon Albarn’s Dr. Dee opera soundtrack album is about to be released, but that hasn’t stopped him from announcing to BBC Radio 4 that he’s making a record under ‘his own name’ (via NME).

“This week we’re mucking around with these Russian synthesizers in a very loose mind of doing some kind of record under my name. I suppose you could call it a solo record, but I don’t like that word. It sounds very lonely – solo. I don’t really want to be solo in my life. But yeah, I’m making another record.”

If you don’t want it to be a solo record, I’ll pop by the studio and smash the cowbell for a bit. Blur are headlining a Hyde Park Olympic show, but that hasn’t stopped Damon from saying that the Olympics are ‘too corporate’.

“The corporate side I find a bit depressing. There’s too much of it [sponsorship]. A lot of people see it differently. We’re putting on another celebration for the official closure of the Olympic Games. But we’re putting it on for London and people who hopefully want to sing their hearts out in a park. I’m signed up to the idea of regeneration in London and putting on a good account of ourselves; definitely.”

When fast food chain, McDonalds, and cola company, Coke, are some of the main sponsors at an athletic competition, you’re damn right things are too corporate! Go write a song about it.

André 3000 to Play Jimi Hendrix in Biopic, All is By My Side

One half of Outkast, André 3000, will continue to not work on a new Outkast project and will continue his foray into acting, by playing Jimi Hendrix in a new film about the guitarist (via Pitchfork). The movie is called All is By My Side, and will begin shooting in Ireland in a few weeks. The film is rumoured to be about Hendrix’s time in England in 1966 (World Cup winners!) and 1967, when he wrote and recorded his first album, Are You Experienced. Instead, the film is actually about Hendrix’s love of British chocolate and how he had a famous chocolate factory, where children were dying to visit, and could if they got some kind of golden ticket. Actually, that sounds like a brilliant film – why has no one made a movie like this?!

Morning Music News – Catchy and Addictive

No Doubt are back after a looooong hiatus (which involved Gwen Stefani dominating the solo music chart) with a new album called Catchy and Addictive. I’m not sure if it is considered selling out and pandering to your audience if you flat out name your album based on how the tunes sound. What’s next, Gwen’s hubby’s band, Bush, reforming?

Gavin Rossdale, hubby of Gwen Stefani, has decided to reform his band, Bush (or Bush X for those Canadians who remember the original band name due to legal reasons). This is a Smashing Pumpkins reunion of sorts, in that the original guitarist and bassist will not be joining in the tour of good times.

Canadian music store, HMV, has been sold
. The parent company, HMV Group, has sold HMV Canada to a restructuring company, Hilco U.K. This deal should inject some cash into the business and help keep them afloat for awhile, until they release no one buys physical CDs anymore, at which point all HMV stores will close and be replaced by local HomeSense stores.
Turntable.fm – Virtual DJ’ing at it’s best

Hypebot looks at how to promote your band using Turntable.fm

Turntable.fm has the user “enter a themed room controlled by 1-5 live DJ’s and just listen (at work, for example) as they take turns picking tunes or add your own. There are opportunities to vote, chat and interact.”

From here, Hypebot sees opportunities such as “Invite fans to listen to an artist spin their favorite music either with other band members filling the dj seats or alongside select fans.”

Charity Under Fire

Like U2, who can’t get any love for trying to avoid paying their taxes, despite charitable donation history, Lady Gaga has come under fire for her $3 Million raised for Japanese tsunami victims. She has been sued for pocketing money from expensive shipping and handling fees for the wristbands she has been selling for charity. I thought only people on eBay did that?
