1 Broken Social Scene x Years: “Day of the Kid”

We now have an official trailer to go with the tracklisting. We get some snippets on the radio before the dial is turned to the next track. Damn kids and their lack of attention span. Many of these bands will be playing the Field Trip festival in June in Toronto, including a reunited Broken Social Scene. Check out the trailer below.

14 Depressing Indie and Rock Songs About Breakups, Heartbreak, and Rejection – Part 2

Valentine’s Day is this week – hooray? Not if you’re single, in a shitty relationship, or recently had Zooey Deschanel get a restraining order against you (I know that she secretly loves me though).

Last year, we ran an extremely popular playlist of depressing indie and rock songs about breakups, heartbreak, and rejection, which has been shared over 7000 times like just my whore of an ex-girlfriend. Since there are literally thousands of songs that fit the bill, and since Zooey Deschanel won’t drop her restraining order against me, I thought another playlist would be in order (which I am typing up no less than 50 yards from Ms. Deschanel – just like the law states).

PeteHatesMusic Hates Valentine's Day

This definitely didn’t take me less than 60 seconds to draw…..

On last year’s playlist, we featured tracks such as The Black Keys – Things Ain’t Like They Used to Be, Stars – Your Ex-Lover is Dead, City and Colour – Sometimes (I Wish), and many others – just click on the link already, so that I can stop typing.

This year, we continued our focus on indie songs, and tried to stick to more recent songs. Since Valentine’s Day is on the 14th, we have another 14 songs for you to play while you get over some jerk that cheated on you, or to play while some girl named Zooey goes out with some other guy who isn’t you. Check it out below in both our YouTube playlist and our Songza playlist, which includes 14 songs from last year, too. Give us some other recommendations below in the comments or @PeteHatesMusic on Twitter.

And instead of rejecting us, how about giving us some Facebook love and Twitter love – who doesn’t love followers (well, besides Zooey Deschanel and her lawyers).

Broken Social Scene to Reunite for Toronto Show with Tons of Other Great Bands

Good news, Broken Social Scene fans. The band are playing their first show since their 2011 ‘break’, as part of a big Arts & Crafts festival call Field Trip. That’s Arts & Crafts as in the Toronto music label, not your grandma’s evening hobby. The line up for the June 8 festival is quite excellent – Broken Social Scene, Feist, Bloc Party, Ra Ra Riot, Cold Specks, Timber Timbre, Hayden, Trust, the Darcys, Jason Collett, Zeus, Gold & Youth, and Still Life Still.

The celebration is for the label’s 10th anniversary, which was co-founded by Kevin Drew of BSS fame. The show is at the Fort York and Garrison Common. Check out a trailer which basically puts images to my words above.

The best part? Kids are free! It’s like eating at some American restaurant (minus the ridiculous portion sizes). Unfortunately, this doesn’t help me at all, so it’s clearly not the best part, especially if they’re going to clog the beer line. Damn alcoholic babies. Early bird tickets are $55 and on sale this Wednesday at 10:30 EST. Regular general admission tickets are $75 and are on sale on Friday, and VIP tickets for you upper class folks are $120.

Watch! Feist – Graveyard

Feist has a new video from a song from the Polaris Prize-winning album, Metals. The song is called Graveyard. Yesterday was Halloween. Graveyard. Halloween. Graveyard. Halloween. However, the video got released post-Halloween – let’s hope Feist doesn’t drop a Christmas album on December 26 as her next move.

Feist – “The Graveyard” (Screen cap)

That being said, the song is a slow burning track, gaining steam as the instruments get added and Feist gets more feisty dynamic with her singing. The video is a touch creepy, shot from far away, showing Leslie in isolation, and in black and white.

Morning Music Notes – Metals Gets the Medals

Feist Wins 2012 Polaris Prize

Last night, Toronto played host to the 2012 Polaris Prize, which recognizes the best Canadian album based on “artistic merit without regard to genre, sales history or label affiliation.” Oh, so this is why Justin Bieber wasn’t nominated. Cracking the shortlist were Cadence Weapon, Cold Specks, Drake, Feist, Kathleen Edwards, Fucked Up, Grimes, Handsome Furs, Japandroids and YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN.

But as the headline revealed, the winner was Feist for her album, Metals (via Spinner). I had my (imaginary Internet) money on Grimes. Feist wins herself some real money, however, to the tune of $30,000.

The prize is awarded based on a Grand Jury of 11 music media professionals, which is parred down from a bigger Polaris jury pool of over 200 writers, editors, broadcasters, DJs and personalities from across Canada. PeteHatesMusic for Polaris personality in 2013!

Justin Vernon to Walk Away from Bon Iver – Eventually

Bon Iver singer, Justin Vernon, might be pulling a James Murphy and walking away from Bon Iver while he still likes the band and its legacy. Vernon told 89.3 The Current (via the Daily Swarm) when asked about Bon Iver that he is “Winding it down. I look at it like a faucet. I have to turn it off and walk away from it because so much of how that music comes together is subconscious or discovering. There’s so much attention on the band, it can be distracting at times. I really feel the need to walk away from it while I still care about it. And then if I come back to it – if at all – I’ll feel better about it and be renewed or something to do that.”

Bad news for Bon Iver fans, but good news for Kanye West, who can use Vernon in a few more of his excellent collaborations.

Watch! Feist – Anti-Pioneer

It’s Friday afternoon, and I’m several beers to the wind. Since that isn’t actually an expression, that’s further proof if you needed it. But before I get so incoherent that I’m yelling at my plants, I thought I’d bring you the latest video from Feist.

Although its not as awesome as her Feistodon collaborative video, it’s still worth a viewing. The song is from Metals and is for Anti-Pioneer (so pro-Sony?). Check it out below and crack a beer for me.

Morning Music Notes – He’s On Fire!

Jay-Z Adds Big Names to Made in America Festival, Becomes Executive Producer of NBA 2K13

Jay-Z’s new Made in America festival already boasted a pretty good line up. Joining Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Passion Pit and others at the September 1/2 festival in Philadelphia are Drake, Chris Cornell, The Hives, DJ Shadow, and Run-DMC (via Consequence of Sound). There’s still tickets on sale, so go grab one – it’s a killer line up.

You would think that being a new father, owning an NBA team, and running a festival would keep most people more than busy enough. Jay-Z isn’t most men, and won’t stop until he gets zero hours of sleep. Adding to his list of tasks – a new reality show with Carrot Top executive producing the NBA video game NBA 2K13. Couldn’t he have worked on NBA Jam instead? I’d LOVE to hear Hova say “Boom shakalaka!” And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll see Beyonce as a cheerleader (damn!) or Jay-Z appearing as the new point guard for the New Jersey Brooklyn Nets.

Jay-Z will be picking the soundtrack for the video game (via Consequence of Sound). Oddly, the soundtrack consists of 95% Jay-Z songs, 4% Beyonce songs, and 1% Kanye West songs. Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad. In reality, it does feature a lot of Jay-Z and Kanye West songs, as well as Coldplay, U2, Nas, Daft Punk, Santigold, Puff “Where have you been” Daddy, and Dirty Projectors. The game is out October 2, and check out the full tracklist below.

Morning Music Notes – Coachella If By Sea

S.S. Coachella – Cash Cow or More Fun for Everyone?

Coachella famously expanded from one weekend festival to two in Indio, California this past year. Now they are moving from the desert to the sea – promoters Golden Voice have announced the S.S. Coachella, with 2 different December cruises (via Consequence of Sound). Now instead of hooking up with chicks in dirty, hot tents, you can have the cruise ship bar and your bedroom right there! Oh, and there’s some music happening, too, such as Hot Chip, Girl Talk, Pulp, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Simian Mobile Disco, Cloud Nothings, !!!, El-P, Black Lips, Grimes, DJ Z-Trip, The Gaslamp Killer, and more, of course. Can you say dance party ship?!

I get seasick and would spend the entire cruise puking to the beats of Hot Chip. The ships head to either Bahamas from Dec. 16 – 19, or Jamaica from Dec. 19-23. There’s even events like wine taste with James Murphy. I’m sure ANY event with Grimes would be insane and worth the price of admission alone.

Now at H&M – More Pouty Lips, with Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rel is the face and voice of clothing giant H&M. She’ll appear in printed ads and video, and she’ll cover Blue Velvet as part of the campaign. The first ad shows her wearing an ugly pink sweater, but since she’s wearing it, even I want to buy it (via Hollywood Reporter).

Polaris Prize Shortlist Names 10 Albums – Did Yours Make It?

The prestigious Canadian music award, the Polaris Prize, have named their 10 short listed albums for 2012 (and a sweet $30,000) (via Rolling Stone). The 10 albums fighting (politely, since we’re Canadian) are Drake – Take Care, Feist – Metals, Japandroids – Celebration Rock, Grimes – Visions, Fucked Up – David Comes to Life, Handsome Furs – Sound Kapital, Kathleen Edwards – Voyageur, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan – YT // ST, Cadence Weapon – Hope in Dirt City, and Cold Specks – I Predict a Graceful Expulsion. I actually don’t know several of these albums! Given the hype behind Fucked Up, they stand a good chance of winning. My early nod goes to Grimes though.

More Gun Violence in Toronto, Drake Calls for Peace, So Does Pete

Toronto, a safe city with few homicides (less in a year than some US cities have in a week), has had an uncharacteristically bad year in this department. The latest incident involved a shooting at a street party, in which a 14 year old and a 23 year old were killed, with two dozen more injured (via Gigwise). Drake (recent Polaris Prize Shortlist nominee!) has taken to Twitter to speak out on the incident, saying “My condolences go out to the family and friends of Shyanne Charles and Joshua Yasay. Senseless violence in Toronto has to stop.”

I leave the city for one year and all hell breaks loose?! Fix this shit for when I’m back in October, alright?

Morning Music Notes – Unoriginal: The Band. Original: Feistodon (Feist + Mastodon)

Drummer from The Band, Levon Helm, Dies at Age of 71

First Dick Clark, now Levon Helm – the 71 year old drummer from The Band passed away yesterday. To youngsters who don’t know them – yes, they were actually called The Band. A few days ago, his family had posted that Helm was in the final stages of cancer. One of the most influential drummers of his time, Helm touched and inspired many. Some quotes making the rounds yesterday:

Bob Dylan: “In response to Levon’s passing: He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I’m going to miss him, as I’m sure a whole lot of others will too.”

Patrick Carney (@PatrickCarney from the Black Keys): “one of the best singers and drummers and it all is sad.”

Tom Morello (@tmorello from Rage Against the Machine): “Hey Levon Helm, thanks man for carrying The Weight of that backbeat (and great vocals) for decades. Inspired so many”

Elton John: “When I heard The Band’s Music from Big Pink, their music changed my life. And Levon was a big part of that band. Nigel Olson, my drummer, will tell you that every drummer that heard him was influenced by him. He was the greatest drummer and a wonderful singer and just a part of my life that was magical. They once flew down to see me in Philadelphia and I couldn’t believe it. They were one of the greatest bands of all time. They really changed the face of music when their records came out. I had no idea he was sick so I’m very dismayed and shocked that he died so quickly. But now my son [Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John] has his name.”

Watch! Feist – Bittersweet Melodies

Bittersweet Melodies might be the name of the new Feist video, or it might be the sound of the music playing while your landlords throws your stereo out the window because you didn’t pay the rent. Sorry sir, I thought investing in this “Pyramid scheme” was going to pay off this time! Feist is still releasing videos for her most recent album, Metals, and you can check out the clever video, which is sort of a slideshow you’d expect to see at a wedding.
