Morning Music Notes – Collaborations Everywhere!

Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival Pulls Out All the Stops

The inaugural Made In America festival, curated and topped by Jay-Z, certainly had a lot of surprises. Sadly, free beer was not upon the surprises. To some it all up in one run on sentence: Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music made a surprise appearance (as if Kanye showing up is a surprise), President Barack Obama had a pre-recorded announcement play, and Jay-Z and Pearl Jam collaborated on 99 Problems (via Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound).

We have video proof of this stuff, too, courtesy of Mr. World Premiere. Check out sets by the G.O.O.D. Music crew (Kanye West, Common, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Pusha T), Jay-Z’s set (with President Obama talking around the 5:00 mark), and the somewhat shaky filmed collaboration between Pearl Jam and Jay-Z. Yes, the President of the biggest super power in the world is talking about people working hard like Jay-Z. I bet Jay never thought that would EVER happen when he was pushing drugs in the street 20 years ago!

Bad Day for Adele: Kicked out of Top 10 Sales in USA, Not Number 1 Selling Album of 2012 in the UK

Oh Adele. A rough few days for you. Everyone thought you were married, but you’re not. And after selling millions of albums for the past year and change, no one cares about you anymore. Okay, a slight exaggeration, but Adele has fallen from her mighty, mighty, ridiculously high perch – into her piles and piles of money!

First, in the United States. Adele spent a massive 78 weeks in the Billboard Top 10, selling an equally massive 9.7 million albums. But for the first time since March 2011, she finds herself on the outside of the Top 10 looking in (via Consequence of Sound). Fret not, Adele – you have the record for most weeks in the top 10 by a female artist! The only albums that have been in the top 10 longer are Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. and The Sound of Music soundtrack.

Now, in the United Kingdom, Emeli Sandé’s album is the best selling album of 2012 thus far, passing Adele’s 2011 album, 21. Sandé’s album was released in February and has sold 660,000 copies in the UK (via Gigwise). Adele has sold a mere 657,000 this year, but 4.4 million since it’s release last year. The third best selling album in the UK this year is Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die, then Ron Weasley Ed Sheeran, and Coldplay.

Jay-Z Adds Big Names to Made in America Festival, Becomes Executive Producer of NBA 2K13

Jay-Z’s new Made in America festival already boasted a pretty good line up. Joining Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Passion Pit and others at the September 1/2 festival in Philadelphia are Drake, Chris Cornell, The Hives, DJ Shadow, and Run-DMC (via Consequence of Sound). There’s still tickets on sale, so go grab one – it’s a killer line up.

You would think that being a new father, owning an NBA team, and running a festival would keep most people more than busy enough. Jay-Z isn’t most men, and won’t stop until he gets zero hours of sleep. Adding to his list of tasks – a new reality show with Carrot Top executive producing the NBA video game NBA 2K13. Couldn’t he have worked on NBA Jam instead? I’d LOVE to hear Hova say “Boom shakalaka!” And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll see Beyonce as a cheerleader (damn!) or Jay-Z appearing as the new point guard for the New Jersey Brooklyn Nets.

Jay-Z will be picking the soundtrack for the video game (via Consequence of Sound). Oddly, the soundtrack consists of 95% Jay-Z songs, 4% Beyonce songs, and 1% Kanye West songs. Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad. In reality, it does feature a lot of Jay-Z and Kanye West songs, as well as Coldplay, U2, Nas, Daft Punk, Santigold, Puff “Where have you been” Daddy, and Dirty Projectors. The game is out October 2, and check out the full tracklist below.

Radiohead Play First Live Show Since Toronto Accident, Play Treefingers Live

Last month, the families of Scott Johnson and Radiohead were hit hard by the death of Radiohead drum tech, Scott Johnson, after an accident in Toronto. After several rescheduled dates, Radiohead took to the stage for the first time last night in Nimes, France, and paid tribute to Scott Johnson (via Pitchfork). Instead of simply saying something about the accident, the classy band covered the video screens behind them with pictures of Scott during a performance of Reckoner during the third encore.

The performance also saw the shock performance of the middle “breather” song on Kid A, the instrumental Treefingers, performed live for the first time. Take a watch below with some fan-shot footage, and hope that Thom lops off that ponytail soon.

The band move onto play Bilbao BBK this Friday and Optimus Alive on Sunday, and PeteHatesMusic will be there on Sunday to report about it. Look out for our Optimus Alive preview later today.

Trent Reznor to Score Another Video Game Soundtrack, Talks How To Destroy Angels

During the flurry of new music released yesterday, we failed to mention another exciting tidbit – Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails will be composing the music for the next Call of Duty game (via Spinner). It’s rumoured (in my head) that Reznor is trying to “kick Paul McCartney’s upcoming soundtrack’s ass”). The game is out on November 13 (but you fans already know this) and is called Call Of Duty: Black Ops II. Reznor has previously played Call of Duty until his wife threatened a divorce done video game soundtrack work for Quake and Doom 3. He loves him some first person shooters.

Speaking about the music, Reznor said “”There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface. So it didn’t make sense to have a gung ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty.”

More good news for Trent Reznor fans: he is posing for Playgirl also readying a new album with the side project with his wife, How to Destroy Angels. I still think that is an amazing band name. The record will apparently be out soon, after Trent does some tinkering.

“We are doing a different type of distribution this time so it’s taking a little bit longer to coordinate stuff,” he said. “There’s a lot of music about to be unleashed, videos, etcetera.”

Concert Review: Coldplay @ Emirates Stadium, London, England (with setlist)

Coldplay played a slew of shows at the O2 Arena in London just 6 months ago, but that didn’t stop them from easily fitting 50,000+ fans in the Emirates in North London for three shows this week. For those fans of the Queen, you had a dilemma on your hands last night, as the Diamond Jubilee concert with Paul McCartney, Elton John and other no names played a show to hundreds of thousands of fans outside Buckingham Palace. Now I’m not saying I chose Coldplay over a former Beatle and a once in a lifetime event – the Diamond Jubilee concert wasn’t announced until after I’d purchased my tickets.

These wristbands totally clash with my outfit

One of the more anticipated events of the concert was the Xylobands, the glow in the dark flashing wristband that all concert attendees received. The bands are radio-controlled and cannot be reactivated (or so they think!) once you leave the show, so I am planning to never leave the stadium. Chris Martin said that the Xylobands are costing the band too much money, and they thought about having fans return them but it was deemed unsanitary (by officials, not the band). For a band that I consider to be very fun and fan-friendly, I find that a bit of a surprising statement; that he wants to detract from the fan experience and take away a memento.

Watch! Coldplay (featuring Rihanna) – Princess of China

Lost in the Diamond Jubilee excitement of this weekend was the fact that Coldplay unveiled a video for their own royalty themed song, Princess of China. The song and video feature Rihanna, and is not your typical Coldplay song, which might be why it’s so bloody good and catchy.

The video tries to make Chris Martin look like a badass, which is perhaps the funniest idea in the history of film. It also features him walking, which is a much different walk than he did for Yellow all those years ago. Things have changed since then for the band and Chris Martin. Rihanna wears clothes! And has normal coloured hair! The video even has a little Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-esque flying through the air styled fights. No, Chris Martin and Rihanna did not Romeo and Juliet themselves, to the dismay of many haters I’m sure. Check it out below.

Coldplay Pay Tribute to MCA, Cover Fight For Your Right (Live at Hollywood Bowl)

In August 2009, I headed to New York (well, technically New Jersey) to see the 2nd annual All Points West Music festival, with headliners Coldplay, Tool, and the Beastie Boys. Unfortunately, it was around the time that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys had first gotten diagnosed with cancer, and the Beastie Boys withdrew, and were replaced by Jay-Z. Jay-Z came on the stage and performed a rousing version of the Beastie’s No Sleep Till Brooklyn, completely winning over the crowd. Coldplay, who are known for clever live ad libbing and doing short covers, covered Billie Jean (in honour of the recently departed Michael Jackson), and they also paid tribute to MCA, doing a short version of Fight for Your Right.

Last night, Coldplay were at the Hollywood Bowl in California and once again performed a cover of the Beastie Boy’s Fight for Your Right. The version is drastically different – Chris, Johnny, Will, and Guy do NOT rap – it’s instead a drastically altered piano ballad. The crowd clearly doesn’t recognize the famous lyrics at first, and the song is so different that they are afraid to sing along. And maybe it should be that way. Check out Coldplay’s cover below.

Check Out Coldplay on American Idol, Performing Paradise and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall

Disclaimer #1: I have never seen more than 5 minutes of American Idol.
Disclaimer #2: I like Coldplay (don’t be hatin’!)

These 2 disclaimers met head-on last night, as Coldplay dropped by American Idol to boost their already mega-popularity by appearing on the top rated show. Ryan Seacrest makes sure that Fox hits all their marketing needs with a bunch of bulllshit for the first minute and a half in the first video, for Coldplay’s Paradise, so skip ahead to the 1:30 mark to see the good stuff begin. Since this is not an official Fox video, it might get taken down like the Death Star did by Luke Skywalker (Star Wars reference on Star Wars Day – May the 4th be with you). That last sentence was the only thing that could make this post any worse than it already is: American Idol, Star Wars, and Coldplay – please don’t murder me!

If You’re Seeing Coldplay on Tour, Here is How Rihanna Will Look

Coldplay are on a world tour, taking them, well, around the world. One of the stand out songs from Mylo Xyloto is the surprising duet with Rihanna. Since they can’t take her on tour ($$$$), they have her on video for their song together on Princess of China. Through the magic of technology (video cameras, which have been around for decades), you can see Rihanna singing along with her part. If you’re unable to make it to the show, or want to spoil it for your friends, check out how it’ll look below. This is not the official video, although it is tipped to be the next single, so maybe it IS part of the upcoming video. Now if only Tool would release the videos that they put up when they perform live – now that would be wild.

Listen! 4 Songs by The Flaming Lips, Including Collaborations with Chris Martin (Coldplay), Ke$ha, and Prefuse 73, plus a Beach Boys cover

It was a busy weekend in the world of the Flaming Lips, so we’re going to catch up in one giant post. On Saturday’s Record Store Day, Los Lips dropped the extremely limited and collaborative LP, The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends. You can see the official video for their collaboration with Prefuse 73 called Supermoon Made Me Want to Pee (whatever the hell that means). The video is an animated video, which is fitting to the franctic, end of world vibe the song gives. Also included in this Flaming Lips post is their collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, for the song I Don’t Want You To Die, as well as their song with Ke$ha. Yup, a very diverse set of collaborators. The last 2 songs are audio rips and not official videos, so they might get taken down.

There are some interesting comments on the YouTube videos, with people questioning their talent, the effect of drugs on their brains, and people jumping to their defense. Have the Lips lost it, did they never have it, or are they still awesome? Decide for yourself.

Also below is a rip of the song the Flaming Lips contributed to the Beach Boys Pet Sounds tribute album, which is running with the music magazine MOJO as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. The Flaming Lips applied their touch to God Only Knows, and you can listen to it below.
