Morning Music Notes – His Master’s Voice Has Gone Silent

HMV Goes into Administration in the UK

Music retailer HMV, with 239 stores in the UK and Ireland, has gone bankrupt (aka ‘entered administration’ in the UK) after one final push to secure funding did not work (via Yahoo). Accounting firm Deloitte will cook the books try and keep the stores open as they look for a buyer.

HMV was first opened on Oxford Street in London in 1921, and became a massive and recognizable music store. After great heights in the 1990s, online music and the lack of physical album purchases led to a decline in sales. Even a shift to DVDs and games couldn’t help out HMV. Is this a surprise? Sadly, no – people in Toronto know all about the closing of music stores (goodbye Sam the Record Man and Tower Records, to name a few).

Guess Who Tied a Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen Chart Record? Calvin Harris. Who?!

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, has had a massive 7 tracks from the same album reach the top 10 in the charts, tying a record with better known dudes like Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen. Harris’ track, Drinking from the Bottle (which flu doctors everywhere hate), hit number 5 in the UK, making it the seventh track in the top 10. The other 2 albums are Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA (via Gigwise).

Kurt Cobain: The Documentary

A few weeks ago, we posted a story about Kurt Cobain: The Musical, which widow Courtney Love denied. We now have confirmation that Courtney Love is insane a Kurt Cobain documentary is in the works, and will be out in 2014 (via Rolling Stone).

The movie is being made by Brett Morgen, who said “Courtney [Love] is the one that brought me into this. We’ve been trying to find the right time to put this film together and the time is now.”

Morgen added, “Kurt was not only an amazing songwriter and musician, he was an incredible artist and filmmaker. So we are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography – [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life.”

Maybe he IS around – as a zombie! Those movies never go out of style.

Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West to Play Hurricane Sandy Benefit

I’m sure everyone remembers the benefit after Hurricane Katrina, where Kanye West uttered the now famous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” line. Now that Kanye West is playing a benefit for Hurricane Sandy, will Kanye say “Barack Obama doesn’t care about black people”? It would be sort of awesome if he did. Or if Mike Myers could return the favour and say that “Barack Obama doesn’t care about white people.”

121212 Robin Hood Benefit

The Hurricane Sandy benefit will take place 12/12/12 at Madison Square Gardens, and will feature Paul McCartney (who can’t get enough of NYC), Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Kanye West, Roger Waters, the Who, Alicia Keys, parent of the year Bon Jovi, and Billy Joel. Wow. Insert insensitive “I wish my city would get hit by a hurricane” comment.

Proceeds go to the Robin Hood fund, which is a poor (pun sort of intended) name for a charity, and it’s copyright, isn’t it?

Morning Music Notes – Tom, You’ll Be A Woman Soon

Front Man of Against Me! Wants to Be a Front Woman – Tom Gabel is Transgender

It takes enormous balls to admit to wanting a sex change in the entertainment industry, but that’s just what Against Me!’s Tom Gabel has – or had – as Tom is transgender and wants to become Laura Jane Grace (via Pitchfork). Tom revealed this news in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone. Tom will alter her body through treatments and hormones. If you re-read the lyrics to the Against Me! song, The Ocean, they totally take on a new meaning with this news:

“And if I could have chosen,/ I would have been born a woman,/ My mother once told me she would have named me Laura,/ I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her.”

Tom has said that he isn’t attracted to men, and will remain married to his wife Heather, with whom he has a 2 year old girl. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Gabel told Rolling Stone. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”

This also brings about an interesting change of direction for future Against Me! songs, and perhaps a rift in the fanbase, depending how their new direction goes. Pitchfork also points us towards an unreleased track that was performed live on March 19, with Gabel singing Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Check it out below.

Morning Music Notes – SXSW and St. Patrick’s Day Hangover Edition

Apologies for the sporadic posts last week – I was chasing leprechauns (and women) in Ireland, and thought drinking top notch Guinness was more important than giving you music news. I don’t regret the decision, and only slightly regret the 12 hour Guinness session.

SXSW Wrap Up

As Rich pointed out in last week’s Morning Music Notes, Bruce Springsteen had some pretty awesome things to say last week. If you like Bruce and have 50 minutes to spare, don’t throw on one of his albums – listen to his South by Southwest Keynote Address.

The Boss also performed with Arcade Fire and Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave fame) and a few others. Check out the video of the Woody Guthrie cover, This Land is Your Land.

Morning Music Notes – This weekend was a Blur

Graham Coxon and Damon Albarn Debut New Blur Song

At last night’s War Child benefit show in London’s Shepherds Bush Empire, Blur members Graham Coxon and Damon Albarn played a new Blur song called Under the West Way (via Consequence of Sound). The band has been on hiatus since 2003 and since then, Damon has been in 2-3 awesome side project bands, leaving the future of Blur, um, blurry. I think I’m 0 for 2 with Blur puns and comments, so I’ll stop before I blurt out another one. Tomorrow night, the Brit Awards will take place in London, with all the members playing together for the first time in 3 years.

You can watch the new song performance below.
