Listen! Kanye West (featuring Jay-Z and Big Sean) – Clique

Kanye West has posted a new track online, that is likely from the G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer. Pretty much any track that has Kanye West and Jay-Z on it is worth paying attention to, and this is another good one. Kanye is back at his lyrical tricks, with some great flow on his verses, too. The much-talked about line of “Ate breakfast at Gucci/ My girl a superstar all from a home movie” about Kim Kardashian steals the spotlight, but the whole song is worth lending your ears to.

Morning Music Notes – Collaborations Everywhere!

Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival Pulls Out All the Stops

The inaugural Made In America festival, curated and topped by Jay-Z, certainly had a lot of surprises. Sadly, free beer was not upon the surprises. To some it all up in one run on sentence: Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music made a surprise appearance (as if Kanye showing up is a surprise), President Barack Obama had a pre-recorded announcement play, and Jay-Z and Pearl Jam collaborated on 99 Problems (via Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound).

We have video proof of this stuff, too, courtesy of Mr. World Premiere. Check out sets by the G.O.O.D. Music crew (Kanye West, Common, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Pusha T), Jay-Z’s set (with President Obama talking around the 5:00 mark), and the somewhat shaky filmed collaboration between Pearl Jam and Jay-Z. Yes, the President of the biggest super power in the world is talking about people working hard like Jay-Z. I bet Jay never thought that would EVER happen when he was pushing drugs in the street 20 years ago!

Morning Music Notes – Kanye West to release G.O.O.D Music Aug 7

New Kanye!
Kanye West’s G.O.O.D collaboration project is set to release drop (dropped from where?) a new album on August 7. The album will be called Cruel Summer, which shares a title with a recent film/art installation project that Kanye West and Kid Cudi released at this year’s Cannes Festival.
Opinion: Set expectations to ‘high’ for this release – as it features some very talented names; Jay Electronica, Frank Ocean, Big Sean, to name a few. With this much talent and star power, one would think a more grandiose acronym than G.O.O.D might be in order?
Here’s a taste:

Watch! Kanye West featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz – Mercy

A couple of months ago, we previewed the new Kanye West G.O.O.D. Music collaboration with fellow label mates Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz. No word on where this song will land, but it’s assumed a G.O.O.D. Music album. This black and white movie features clones of the various artists popping up, sort of like Agent Smith from the Matrix. I was hoping for some Matrix-esque battle scenes, but this slick video will suffice. For now.

This is What Kanye West’s Theatre Looks Like at Cannes

Kanye West is in Cannes for the Cannes Film Festival, doing what he does best – making fondu being an over-the-top artist. He is debuting his Cruel Summer flick, which is a musical art project. He got New York Architecture firm OMA to help design his venue, and it’s mighty impressive (via Gizmodo). 7 screens, 17 feet by 17 feet, arranged at slightly obscure angles, yet looking natural and innovative. Check out some of the pics below, but head over to OMA for the complete package (and other cool projects). In case you missed Kanye’s last film, check out the film he did for Runaway back in 2010.

The Cruel Summer film was shot in Doha, Qatar last month, and stars Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman, with small parts for Kanye West himself, and Aziz Ansari (who I’m puzzled as to why he has a successful career).

A Little More Info on Info on Dave Grohl’s Sound City Documentary

We’ve known that Dave Grohl is doing a documentary on Sound City, the record studios in Van Nuys, California. Now the man himself has spoken out about it (via Rolling Stone).

“Sound City is a film about America’s greatest unsung recording studio,” said Grohl. “Deep in California’s sun-burnt San Fernando Valley, tucked away behind the train tracks and dilapidated warehouses, it was the birthplace of legend. It was witness to history. It was home to a special few, intent on preserving an ideal.”

Witness to history, and witness to Nirvana recording a certain Nevermind album there, too. The soundtrack for the album is expected to feature Dave Grohl collaborating with the likes of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Springfield, Corey Taylor from Slipknot, and all sorts of surprises – my word, not his, but you should value them equally.

Olympic Park Line Up Doesn’t Get a Gold Medal, Just a Participation Ribbon

Great Britain is hosting the Summer Olympics in London this July and August – which is NOT the story, here. However, there is a gig in Hyde Park with bands representing the 4 factions of Great Britain. Stereophonics will represent Wales, Paolo Nutini for Scotland, Snow Patrol for Northern Ireland and fuckin’ Duran Duran for England (via Telegraph). England, with the history of producing perhaps the best bands in music history is being represented by 80s pop group, Duran Duran. The concert will take place (with ZERO PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE) on July 27, to coincide with the opening ceremonies, which will be broadcast on big screens in between acts.

Simon Le Bon, the lead singer of Duran Duran, said: “Performing to so many people on the most exciting day in sport for Great Britain will be one of the highlights of the last decade for us. We have been invited to represent England for this Team GB show, and we couldn’t be more proud. Seeing the torch being lit on the big screens before hitting the stage in this iconic location will be a great experience… we simply can’t wait”.

I, for one, CAN wait. Time to self-induce a coma!

Morning Music Notes – Happy G.O.O.D. Friday Everyone

Yup, I stole the G.O.O.D. Friday pun from Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music Fridays, but today is actually Good Friday, so I’m forgiven, right? Wrong.

Listen to new Kanye West track, Mercy, featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz

Kanye West announced he’d be dropping a new track today, since no one releases songs, they only drop them. The track is Mercy, and features a slew of guest stars. Not as great as his last 2 brilliant albums, but then again, I didn’t like the first track from Watch the Throne (H.A.M.) and that album turned out more than alright. The track is expected to be on the G.O.O.D. Music collaborative album, and is rumoured to also feature songs with Frank Ocean and Jay Electronica. Give Mercy a listen below.

Pitchfork Festival Adds More Acts (Who Won’t Be At Benicassim or Optimus Alive)

July 13-15 is one good weekend for worldwide festivals. You have the Benicassim festival in Spain, you have Optimus Alive in Portugal, and you have the Pitchfork festival in the United States. The Pitchfork festival just got a whole lot better, so those of you stateside are in for a treat. Pitchfork have added a bunch of acts, including Beach House, Wild Flag, Real Estate, Cults, and Atlas Sound, amongst many others (via Pitchfork, of course). These acts are added to the lineup that already includes Vampire Weekend, Feist, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, Dirty Projectors, Flying Lotus, AraabMUZIK, A$AP Rocky, the Field, and many others. So throw on some ironic clothing, a snarky button, and get ready to bash some bands!
